I just went through this recently. I sold my big ampeg cab and opted for much smaller foot print. A year ago I got the Fender stage 2x10 with the 2x10 extension cab. I never use them together. I would bring the Stage 2x10 solo pleanty loud. But I would use a stand to angle the combo and raise it off the floor.
For smaller venues I run right into the board. I picked up a GK Plex and have been using this for the last 4 gigs. No amp. We use in ears and no monitors. I also have a studio 40 for medium venues when I use stage wedges. But again I wanted a stand to angle it up and I did not like the fact that I was pushing the volume
I didn't want to overwork the amp.
I just picked up the Peavey max 208. 141 rms peak watts 200. It has an angled speaker baffle so you don't need to kick it back. Now I'm just carrying my pedal board, amp and bass. I can't think of a venue where I would need more than that. Direct to FOH.

Doubling amps is more cost effective than upgrading a single amp... usually. You get more power and more speaker area, plus more EQ to tinker with.
Doubling cabinets is even better if your single cabinet is 8 ohms and your amp is max rated for 4 ohms but this is a Combo Amp forum!!

If work picks up sufficiently, I'll get a second R100 to either use both daisy chained, or alternate them.
The "more EQ" part really depends on how you connect them and the design of the amps. For example the Fender Rumble combos from 100 to 500 can connect from FX Send to FX Return and the sending amp totally controls the Returning amp. But some others leave the Returning amp in control of it's own Volume, or Master. And some don't work well with FX Returns at all and need to put the signal into their Input, where it has to be re-EQ'd!
A lot of combos these days are 4 ohm capable with just an internal 8 ohm speaker set, allowing an 8 ohm cab to produce the full nameplate power from them! And Fender's bass-modeling Stage 800 combo, and their newest non-modeling Rumble 800 COMBO, are 2.67 ohm capable such that they can drive two external 8 ohm cabs, or one 4 ohm cab, in addition to their internal 8 ohm speaker sets! Now, that's some mighty, mighty combos!!

I'm really enjoying this Peavey Max 208. It sounds amazing. It's got a 3 ba d eq and overdrive circuit. Each eq knob has a corresponding button that shifts the eq band. I needed a straight amp with a small foot print.
Interesting. It's basically a combo version of the Trace Elliott Elf head and 2x8 cab.
As I read it, it is 200w through the internal 8 ohm speaker circuit? (The Elf is 200w at 4 ohm, so you can add anther cab.)
I have several other amps also. I just needed something just a little louder to monitor my bass from behind when I move from the stage wedges. I like the design of the angled speaker baffle. It eliminates the need for an amp stand. It definately projects sond to your ears at 5 of 6 feet away from the amp. Only thing I would have done different is to add some built in compression. In my opinion this should be standard on all these combos. I have an older Bugera Nuke that has the 1 knob compression it's a great feature.
Don't know yet as I've only used it in the house so far. Will report back after first time using it at volume. For house use it's very middly, but then it's hardly on. I like the weight so far.....!
Have people seen the new Genzler Series 2 "combos"? They sure look like head/cab arrangements to me? ~Could they mean 'combo' in that's how we make more $$ selling them? -Anyway, I don't really care what they call them~ $1,300 (and up) for a small 'combo' is too rich for me...
Their ad copy reads, "The MG350-BA10-COMBO-S2 is a combo “kit” offering the mounting of the MG-350 amplifier to the BA10-2-S2 cabinet, using our “hidden” MG-350-CRADLE, which can be mounted to the top surface of the bass cabinet. Maybe this is their modern version of the Porta-Flex system? Affixing the head to the cab for a one piece carry.
