The Combo Club

.
Here's an interesting thread for some of our Combo Club brethren and sisteren to chime in on. Thoughts on combos
.

THANK YOU. 90% of the posts on this thread, seriously, seem to have nothing at all to do with bass combos and are instead witty little bits of private repartee between members, far more suited to Instant Messages. I’ll check out that thread....

Adios, fellow bassist. May you find what you're looking for out there in the world of bass forums. If ya feel like stopping by once in a while to say hi, the door is always open.

One disadvantage of recording is if you 'clam', it's there for posterior...er, posterity. Unless you redo it.
A trumpet player I worked with for many years would say"we ain't exactly makin' musical history here".

I hear ya, GP. In fact, sometimes I think, as I'm strapping on the bass that I'm defacing musical history!

Did a recording session for a keyboardist buddy of mine. VERY nice digital studio. Engineer/producer asked me to re-record one specific passage and add a sliding part to it. Said he'd "punch it in" later. I played as directed but hit a clam on the first note coming out of the slide. He said not to worry because he was punching it in. I listened to the final mix and realized he left the clam in when he punched in the slide part. Now I can tell everyone I'm a "jazz guy"...:D:thumbsup::cool:

Before I head to bed and off to the great place of learning tomorrow, I wanted to take a moment and add two very deserving bass players onto our roster. Orpheus55 and minronnee both shared combos today and made nice contributions to the club. O55, you're member #175, and minronnee, you'll be forever known as #176. Add these to your sigs so when you buzz around this here bass forum, everyone will know who you are and bow gracefully. Well...maybe not gracefully. Congrats and welcome aboard!

I personally thought we had not only a great day on Thursday but a super couple of weeks. Thanks so much for witty banter, keeping tabs on our friends in currently hot places, helping me out with the next great purchase, sharing in the meeting of Chowny (very cool), and you folks just being you folks. Like Biggie just said, for every clam we hit we can call it...jazz! 'Night CC!

Fantastic! May I add you to our membership roster? You'd be our first commercial member and what's cool is I'm getting the vibe that you're just a bass-loving, combo-is-good-too kinda person like the rest of us. Please let me know and I'll do the rest. BTW, awesome pics of a couple of terrific amps.

Sure! Why not. Add me :)

I didn't know there was combo snobbery at work? It's the same stuff that's in the amps - all in one easy to carry box!

About 90% of the videos on our youtube channel were recorded on one or the other of our two combos (mostly the Markbass Ninja - it's easy to move about!)

Youtube channel is here ---> Chowny

We mic up and DI and then run those into a Tascam 1641 interface. And then mix it together for the final audio.

These are perfect for studio work.

Good morning. Fantastic! It’s with great pride, before I have to haul my carcass off to work this morning, to appoint you with member number 177. Please stop in anytime you’re in the Combo amp mood or just want to get away from the daily stresses.

Members, out of respect to a vas’s-playing brotha , please stop by the Chowny YT channel for recordings of our fave instrument.

Great way to start the day, thanks! :hyper:

Great endorsement for your Micro 112. I took a serious look at that a while back but just couldn't see spending that much money fora 150-watt amp when there's so much out there in the way of smaller and more powerful. No dissing the quality of the unit or sound. I've read many a story where these buggers are still sounding great years later. at first, I couldn't fathom the metal cab, but then after owning the Foxy Voxy combo with its ABS plastic cabinet, I can now believe anything.
Yep, I purchased my GK combo back in about '93, and it was about the smallest and most powerful amp I could find at the time. "What? 150 Watts?? 26 pounds?? That SMALL????"

I had my first post-college job, so it seemed a good time to splurge. Now, amps this size and power are all over the place.

I have a odd 'dropping out' effect that has been happening with it since last year. Took it in for service, and was told that it had a couple of connections that needed re-soldering. It's better now, but still drops down to zero output on random intervals after it's been up and running for 30 minutes or more.

Other than that, it's been a great little practice amp (banished to the basement), acoustic jam (used to have a regular jam with my wife on violin, and two friends with acoustic guitars), and coffee shop gig amp.

I just ordered it so I'll have to let you know. It just seemed like the perfect solution for apartment practice, camping, traveling and possibly future tiny gigs. One thing I like is the passive radiator party trick that Phil Jones borrowed from his experience in the HiFi speaker industry. It should work like having an unpowered 6x9 speaker that is passively powered by the 2 four inch speaker's motion, as long as the cabinet is sealed.
What is a "passive radiator party trick"? I need some 'splainin...:help:

Ya know, I was wondering what you guys were hassling me about and so I went back to the pic and now get it.

All I can say is it takes a well-adjusted, confident person to take pride in his wife’s sparkle cup. So yes, Giff, I will bring the cup with me to Oz and expect a serving of your village’s finest brew!
Yeah, "his wife's sparkle cup." Riiiiiigghht.

Received wisdom here on TB is that separate heads and cabs are better. It’s quite odd - you never hear guitar players diss combos.

Ya know, it's like the guy who walks into the bar, hears one song he doesn't like, and leaves. There was a holiday season and a couple of our Australian friends are facing disaster, so well wishes poured out.
If you ask a question here, you'll get answers. As is said in another thread, "the search function is for people too lazy to ask".
And, BTW, we would never have 'met' without Combo Club, so, so much for IM's.[end of "rant"]

Yes, it's very puzzling to me. Why not have a combo, AND a separate head and cabinet? Several of us on this thread have all manner of mix-and-match, and see no point in finding one set-up better or worse than another.

Do we complain that our hammer makes a terrible screw driver? Do we kvetch that our adjustable wrench does a poor job of pounding nails?
