This example of the 500/1 is called the Cavern spec., because the spacing of the pickups is closer together. It is called this because it was this kind of bass that Macca played at the Cavern Club. Hard to say. This is because they have different pickups too. My 68 has blade pickups, which are single coil, while my Cavern has two mini-humbuckers and has a sound block in side. In general the Caverns can have a deeper tone, since it has both pickups closer to the neck. One thing you can do with the Cavern, though, is solo the 'bridge' pickup, which will get you a tone closer to a Pbass. This is simply because it is in, or close to, the sweet spot.

I should add that the guy in the video I posted also has a video playing the same song with the 'normal' spacing. That could indicate the difference in tone. Hofner does offer different types of pickups and configuration on their 500/1s so that the same instrument can produce some variation in tone. That's why I clearly need to buy more Hofners ...

No. Only fingers really. I find the 500/1s cut through nicely most of the time. Sometimes I get lost in the mix, but rarely.

I'm all fingers as well. Enjoyed the tone of the video with the dude playing with a pick. I've attempted, but alas the pick is not for me. I have tried to emulate Geddy's flamenco technique for when I need 16th notes - I'm getting there!

Me too, with installing from low to high. I also take all the strings off at the same time (booing and hissing ensues from the crowd) because I do a complete cleaning of the neck and don’t want strings in the way. I’m not saying it’s the only way, but it is for me. And this is coming from the guy with a set neck that’s rather delicate and never had any issues.

You may now launch salvos...

I'm the same with taking all the strings off and then cleaning up everything I can reach before putting the new strings on. Never had a problem doing that.

I started out playing only rock/metal strictly with my fingers. No pick, and even found it odd when famous players used picks. Had a guy in a band I played with for about 2 weeks try to shame me into playing with a pick. He was all about showing how he could do certain things with a pick that I could not with my fingers. Did not impress me.

Then I set down my basses for a few years, and started playing guitar. Played folk and 70's stuff mostly, 90% acoustic, and always with a pick. Then just a few years ago, I pulled out my 3 basses and started playing again. Now I find myself switching back and forth. Some songs just feel right with a pick, some don't. Some basses feel more right with a pick. My palm-mute technique transferred pretty well, so sometimes that makes my pick playing a bit cleaner. Plus, I tend to push too hard on my thumb when I anchor it to play with my fingers, and it gets sore in the joint after only a couple songs.

I really should work on my technique.

I think that ability with both pick and fingers is likely the best way to go. So many exceptional players use picks, and sometimes a pick it the best thing for the tone one is going for. I'm just too lazy to be proficient with both fingers and pick. My practice time usually involves playing songs I know and partially learning songs I like. I rarely work on technique. Working on technique can definitely be a good thing, but i'm just not into it.
