Yeah, these are tough issues to settle. Are you aware of the distinction between obligatory and supererogatory acts?I and some friends have debated this sort of concept in the past: if a person is depending on another person's body part for life (say a kidney), does the person who will die have a right to that kidney?
Many times the discussion is interesting, but spirals into the answer of "no, a person who will die without a particular kidney does not have a right to the kidney of an other." Then a person spins it in a different direction which I'm sure you may be able to guess, and the political aspect comes into it and the whole debate kicks off again.
So nothing great learned, but spirited debate.
I started with a pick and moved very quickly to fingers. Now I can't really use a pick. It hurts too much. I'm only a hobby player, so it is no big deal. No a big dilemma here ...
Could be. I find that it just feels a bit more natural to use an up-down pattern with a pick rather than the 1-2-3 pattern I used with finger playing. Of course, I played guitar for about 10 years between my bass playing eras, so maybe I just trained myself to feel rhythm better with a pick.
I went the other direction. In the 80s/90s I used only my fingers (can't accidentally drop them) and felt I was pretty proficient with that three finger technique (thanks Billy Sheehan). Then my band fell apart and I started playing acoustic guitar with a pick. Then I got a bit bored with guitar and went back to bass. Now it's my finger playing that's not quite as good, and I use whichever gives me the sound I want for a song. Still totally mediocre in the best of times.
Only in a very passing sense. Do you have suggested reading for those?

Maybe the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy might have a entry on the distinction. They are not too complicated, so not much reading would be required. If you don't find something there I could send you a description in PM.

Meh, you been playing a lot longer than I have. I know, we'll call it a tie and say we're both decent players and nice Californians (me formerly, him currently) who are both looking to put together a modest, yet effective home recording studio. You're off to a great start buying good equipment at fantastic prices. I'm looking at monitors while trying to justify spending money in case I hardly have time to record. He's dodging fires and heat, I'm trying to say away from 'Rona. He says po-tay-toe, I say po-ta-toe...let's call the whole thing off! (song reference)
I'm much the same. My problems arise when I'm "thinking" the plucking too much and trying to alternate fingers appropriately - which ends up affecting my timing. Left hand always where it needs to be. This issue really started upon teaching myself bass - I tended to be a one finger wonder...
Me too, b. I try to use my middle finger as well and it works if I get a nice steady rhythm going, but I'm way comfier with the index doing all the heavy lifting. As fast if not faster and more steady too. Recon's AC/DC drills are good for working that "hook" too. Keep those eighths nice and steady!
Hey, why am I up at 1:20 AM again? Oh yeah, day off tomorrow. 
Been playing the last couple of hours and having a nice time in the peace, quiet, and Terror. I'm working right now at getting the Orange and Precision to play nice with one another and it was good. Upon plug-in, there's a nice burble coming off the strings and into the amp. I can accentuate it with some pedal grind (TB is in clean mode with gain anywhere between 9:00-12:00), or I can drop the gain, cut off the OD, and add a touch of bass and get that familiar tone we all grew up with.
Songs I worked on but didn't record (sorry SR, I will tomorrow) were 1) Samantha Fish "Watch it Die" - Rockin' blues. what she can do with literally three notes makes me wanna join in. 2) Beginning to look at "Goldeneye.' Yep, that's enough explanation. 3) Doobie Bros "South City Midnight Lady." Felt like some easy listening Patrick Simmons tonight and I used to play that in a duo a few years ago. Tiran Porter has nothing to worry about, but I do love that song. Thee were a bunch of others and that was the fun part. Just getting a good tone down with the two pieces. Now tomorrow, I may try digitalizing some of it. Good night, all!

I prefer to use two fingers, cause then each finger does half the work. Lessens the likelihood of injury. AC/DC is good for this, and my warm-up drills are good for stretching both hands- Start with E (or B if you’re playing a fiver), and play eight 1/8 notes of each note til the fourth fret, then move to the next string. All the way up, all the way back down. I usually do two repetitions, one slow, one fast.

I find it takes great care on my part to make the index and middle fingers sound the same. The middle finger's longer.
Call it off! The fun was just starting
