Tim is great.Nah, have it sound the way you like it to sound. Prior to Ged going to his trusted Jazz army, I always thought his tone was a bit thin. I liked his Ric sound overall, but ta got to admit it was quite trebly. Now you can spend $$$ on the various Tech21 pedals to replicate that sound.
Speaking of, are you familiar with YYNOT? They're currently my favorite rock band and cover Rush like no one else does, plus they're putting out their own stuff. The bass player uses both a Ric and a Jazzer through Ampeg two stacks but uses the Geddy Lee 2112 pedal that gives it bite. check them out on YT if you haven't heard them. My current fave song of theirs is "Open Book" from their second release back in 2019.
Any man who works a Rush tune-up with a Hofner has a set of brass ones that no one should mess with. Rock on, Doc!

BTW, I did get to do it once to a club owner in East Moline, IL-across from Davenport/Bettendorf, IA. I was sitting in with a band so I didn't get them in any trouble(it was their last night anyway and they'd already decided they wouldn't work for him again). The owner said "you can't talk to me like that", to which I replied, "actually I can. I'm not part of the band and you can't do a thing to me or my reputation." It. Felt. Great!(this was in 1972)
EDIT: About a week later the band I was in broke up and I headed back to Miami. Bye, y'all.

No wonder you have such warm memories of the IA/IL area. Between that and our snow it’s no wonder you want to visit us in the middle of January! You did write that once, didn’t ya? (Yeah, it was when you admitted how much you liked shrimp).
I kinda liked it up there and I s'pose I coulda gotten used to the(crappy) weather, but the band I joined had delusions of grandeur that were not warranted. They wanted to hit the big time w/o paying dues-including rehearsing and getting the material together. I gave it a shot, but it became obvious that they were not willing to put in the work. And I wasn't willing to waste time waiting for them. I came home and got into a band that lasted for over 10 years.

I recommended a combo
to Ari Cap's head coach when he asked the cohort our views. He plays a ~200 watt 15 inch combo and it's at its limits with his current band. His frame of mind is as a player is to ̶t̶u̶r̶n̶ ̶o̶n̶,̶ ̶t̶u̶n̶e̶ ̶i̶n̶,̶ ̶d̶r̶o̶p̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶ plug in and play, and that's IT. Audition it, I said, and AFIK he's already been to, or is going to GC to try out a whole buncha stuff.
.... ah no I didn't recommend a Phil Jones combo.
A lightweight 210 combo is what I said. Add a matching extension cab if you need more.

I fully expect he'll audition Rumbles and Ampegs at GC. And it's a funny thing to me, as one who would very much enjoy playing a 200-ish watt 15 inch combo. And ya know I said I used to carry two 15s ... and there is laughter all around from nodding heads on screen. At last intersection six years ago, I literally could no longer lift the old 15 cab into my car.

I happened into a GC yesterday. Had about half the gear they used to have. They had the Ampeg BA108 I could barely lift! They also had a new Rocket Bass RB-108, which was a bit lighter. I gotta admit that "diamond" vinyl covering looks groovy. And they had a Rumble 40, lighter still!

I went into the larger of 2 GC's 'near' me. They looked like they'd been robbed. IIRC, 5 basses in the bass room(3 amps), maybe 20(?) guitars on the wall that usually has ~150.
Both of the GCs around me are barren. Even the small stupid stuff like a submin to submin adapter, nothing in stock.
Oh, there ya go again, G’Dog. All weight, no sound comparison. While I’d rather the RB-108 to the Rumbler 25, I still think it would sound decent compared to the 40.
It’s a win either way, and I expect Fender to come out in the next year with a V4 combo series in all black and with the NuTube circuit. Now wouldn’t that be cool?
Yeah. It really f---*'s up the "try it at GC, order online" method some people use.(me included)

Or buy the combo, try it out, and either keep it or bring it back to GC. The nice thing is you can have it sent to you and audition it at home. The negative, of course, is you can’t walk out with your wallet fully intact. Be choosy!
