The Combo Club

"Small heart attack" is an exact quote from the admitting doctor. Quoting my reply would be a TB TOS violation, so use your imagination ;) But yeah any heart attack is serious and

I've bass stuff to keep me upright. [FoghornLeghorn] Upright. Bass. That's a joke, son. [/FoghornLeghorn]
[FoghornLeghorn] That's a joke, son! You missed it! Flew right by ya!
He's about as sharp as a bowling ball. [FoghornLeghorn]
:D

Coupling my 2x10 combo to my 4x10 cab is awesome!

I relate. I had a "defibulator" installed back in February this year after my heart had stopped. Was wearing a shock vest that did its job. My best goes out to you.

Wow! Lovey! Did your vest ever announce for people to "Please Stand Clear! Please Stand Clear! Defibrillating in 10, 9, 8, 7 ..."? My son-in-law says his vest did that a couple times before his surgery, but he was always abled to override it. He says his implant can do it, too! I dunno, I never heard it.

More Ampeg RB-115 stuff over here-

Time to test the “Fat Pole” Artec Pbass pickup in my Jaguar with that 15” Eminence speaker. No noise restrictions today, and the two houses on either side of me have been empty for about three-four years! :woot:

I will be starting flat without FX loop, and proceed through SGT test, and then on through to full bridge J Fat Pole with all the toys on!:bassist::woot:
Here are the pickups being installed over the winter.

I like them a lot- lower output than the Duncan Designed stock pickups on this “Vintage Modified” 2013 offering. Seem to bring more character to the party. The Duncan’s sounded a bit sterile on their own- they performed well with a DI preamp in front- these seem more punchy- the P us just great!
I’ll report- here and over at the Ampeg thread as well— sort of it’s own club/info page at this point!!

THAT P fat pole is AMAZING!!

It took this amp to show me that!!

Incredible tone from this combo in all settings so far- P tone is Classic- really brings out everything that makes a P- thunderous low end coupled with a mid-punchy, and can get crunchy high end!!
this took every setting- and hit it out of the park!

I really need to get a nice P bass. Like a great dish of Breyer’s Natural Vanilla Bean ice cream- it’s simple, but PERFECT. (You don’t know how good vanilla ice cream is if you haven’t had this!)

Not to be outdone, the Fat Pole Jazz in the bridge did not disappoint! Roll the treble off a bit, dig in with a pick- OMG- shimmery chorus, gnarly envelope filter. With a touch of hair from the SGT circuit, I defer to @Lowbrow great setting of 9;00! I’ve noticed something cool about the SGT- it does the whole “Sag” thing- sort of a note “bloom” effect of softening the attack a bit. Does not rob high end, just blunts it a bit- I’m not sure if that is clear- it’s hard to describe without sounding like talking about a cheeky Malbec with notes of toasted cherry in the nose or something :smug:

I still have to check out the Sidewinder in the Epi EB-3, and the DiMarzio Model One in my 68 Telecaster Bass. Can’t say enough so far- I also need to plug in the extension cab! :woot::bassist::bassist:

The Chowny CHB-1 I play (when the cat bass isn't being played) boasts Artec humbuckers in with a nod to the Filter'Trons of yore. And, privately, always a little worried about the Artecs on account of them having little reputation for pickups that sound like Malbec with notes of toasted cherry. Yet get a very useable tone* out of the big blue beast.

Thanks. The little Ampeg punches well above it's weight class

it does, it does!

* my intention is to [SomeDay] have the bass rewired Master-Volume-Volume-Tone instead of Volume-Volume-Tone-Tone. It's an un-priority for me as more and more I play only the neck pickup. Big, and fat through even the BA-108. Which is about to get turned on for the first time in a week

@Eddie Jones

This BA-108v2 serves as my practice amp when I practice. I know, weird, isn't it? Of course it's always more exciting when there's enough volume that actually listening to what I play takes a back seat to fun. Stadium volume isn't one of my actual needs right now :wacky:

What I need from a practice amp is the volume knob for the AUX IN, and that's brilliant  I often switch sources mid-practice and my practice routine is kind of ... Prussian :roflmao: The 'Peg is exactly within reach at arm's level as a kickback.

EJ, I also own one of those sweeties and it’s definitely worth the coin you spent. Morrighan and I modded it with a new Eminence speaker that allows you to dine it without any distortion. It’s not a life or death update, but it shows you that this combo is worth it.

I’ll ring you up in just a bit with a number. Thanks!

I might ask how you modded it if you don't mind. It actually sounds better than my Peavey Basic 112.

No problem at all. The two of us swapped out our stock 8" speaker for an Eminence Alpha 8-A speaker. I found it to open up the tone more and its power rating is much higher so there's no distortion. Some may say it's overkill, but both Morrighan and I found it to be an improvement overall in sound. You must know that it's an 8-ohm speaker whereas the Ampeg original is a 4-ohm speaker. What that means is instead of the measly 20 watts you're getting now, you'll get half of it; but the ironic thing is there's, to me, no sense of volume loss. This thing kicks for a room practice amp! Otherwise, she's a stock combo. For $70 there have been no complaints.

Post a pic of your bad boy tomorrow and I'll hand ya #251!

Yeah thanks it took a lot of manipulating to get my wife to be ok with it but I have always preached about the utility and versatility of combos. That's a club I can get behind.

Lowendchamp, congratulations, you are the Combo Club's 250th member...quite a mark! Somewhere we've got a nifty membership ring/fire hose (if you live in the western US), but you may have to wait on it. I'm so glad you joined us because anyone strong enough to get that 62-lb Acoustic combo on top of its 410 extension cab is quite a feat of strength...at least for my back, it would be. You deserve #250! :hyper:

On a side note from me to you, I'm so glad you're okay. This messy place wouldn't be the same without ya. You balance the male domination in this club and that means you have to take good care of yourself for the foreseeable future, okay?
