The CORT Club!!!

Not really sure if I will apply for membership, but thought I at least would share some love for Cort. This seems to be the right place for that, even if I'm sure what I have to say already has been said by many others here.

I've been playing for 30 years, and don't give a *** if the name on my headstock or amp is considered cool or not. That was years ago. I have owned or played through a lot of great and not so great basses over the years, and I know what I look for in a bass. I've gotten a lot of raised eyebrows for playing a Cort, but if it is a bassist I just let him/her try it. Works every time.

I bought my Artisan A4 in 2000 after A/B'ing it with many other basses, some of them much more expensive. It was almost love at first note (and it is always nice to spend less $$ than you plan on doing...) Since then it has been my main axe and has served me very well in a variety of settings. It is incredibly good value for money! It can take a very low action which is good for an old fingerstyle-player who still has a need for speed (my first band was a punk band in 1978 - and it's still fun to play that stuff!). The neck is very fast and suits me perfectly, it has great sustain, good tone and it is very versatile soundwise. I mentioned hardcore punk, and at the other end of the spectrum a good example is a live recording where I'm always told how nice a particular song sounds with my UB. Well, it's the Cort through an ordinary DI. No amp, just monitor.

Only negative issue is that my neck PU died suddenly half a year ago and after replacing it the tone hasn't been quite up to its old standard. Had a tech look at it but he couldn't find anything wrong. Still sounds good though and the percieved change might even be just in my head. But I think I'll possibly go the OBP3-route, that seems to be quite a common thing to do with these basses. How would you that have done this describe the change?

Anyway, I love my A4 and even if I'm about to buy a new bass (no, not a Cort this time ;)) it's a keeper.

Just got this one the other day, and I love it.

(Pay no attention to the strap, by the way)

How can I become a member?

I have 2 A4s, a B4, a GB74, and a EVL Z6B that is arriving Tuesday. No digital camera currently to do them justice with.

The GB74 was a B stock, and only has one toggle switch on it, unlike the ones I see on here that have two, anyone know why? (I dunno maybe that's why it was B stock!)

i have a cort GB94 with SMB4d for the bridge PU.
yesterday, i saw a SMB4a PU with a nice price. could anyone give some opinion on how will the sound of GB94 change, if i replace the SMB4d PU with the SMB4a ?
i think the original sound of standart gb94 is mid-high. will it be significant to boost the low freq if i change the PU ?

Just bought a relatively unusual one, although not TOTL it's a heck of a nice bass, the GB54.

$100 used. it plays like a dream, it's the best playing fretted bass I've owned since I sold my alembic series I back around 1998 to pay bills (yes, I know, stupid reason).

The only thing I own that plays better is my cheapo yamah rbx270 fretless, but it doesn't have nearly the tone of this monster.

I'm considering it a poor man's modulus flea.

pics included... (sorry they're not full body pics, no room in my space to back up far enough without gear blocking the way).

I'm officially the low budget bassist now.
yamaha rbx270 fretless (like $240 new when I bought it, AMAZING bass but pickups a little lacking).
fender MIM precision (nice sunburst) with SD quarter pound pup and badass bridge (total cost to me was like $180 or something since it was even trade for a bass I paid that much for).
And my new to me cort GB54, which might very well be the second best bass I've ever owned, after my alembic. I've owned maybe 3 dozen basses in my life, so that's saying something imho.

i have a similar story regarding cort bass.i am here in south korea only for 2 weeks.my second day here was a blast!! i purchased my cort A five bass..all the specs i always wanted is just right there.to make it short,i was sky high!! i took pictures and showed it to my friends in the philippines via facebook.i get the same reactions.''great looking bass, what is a cort anyway?''.i replied''wait till i get back home and you will see''..going home this time is much anticipated..

i just bought my new cort A5 2weeks ago..i love the bass!!! simple electronics yet powerful tonal capabilities..mahogany with maple top,neck-thru..the wood tone is incredible!!! i took pictures and showed it to friends in the philippines via facebook.all were stunned!! then they asked me''cort?''whats that? i replied''wait till get back home''.im here in south korea..im proud with these korean, they created cort, cort created them too.

Never playing one of these I found a used Cort EVL Z4B at GC. It felt really nice, comfortable in the hand, but it was jacked up(electronics) so I never got to play it through anything. Anyone own one of these sexy beasts that can shed some light on it's sound? It comes stock with active Pups, which I'm not a big fan of but I recon conversion to passive wouldn't be too hard. Anyone share their experience with this bass? I do dig it cosmetically, but in the end if it sounds like crap there is no point :P

I have one, it was my main bass for years, truly a steal for the cash, still one of the best necks I've come across.
I love mine, thats for sure, I think it'll be the one I'm rocking tomorrow. :)

The pickups themselves are completly passive, its the pre thats active.
Great tone, neck pickup soloed has a tasty growl.

I lately added a coil cut to mine. I don't use it much(the coil cut, that is) because of the volume drop, must get a gain pedal for it.

I picked up this black Cort C4 from Insurance Co. the neck had been snapped in shipping, and I figured that I could get a new neck and sell it at a discount. It was new in box when shipped, and only has one small chip next to the neck pocket. I tried contacting Cort to get a new neck with no luck. They promised to look into it for me then stopped responding to any email.

Anyone know of someone with a neck to spare?

I'll need to take a pic and post it, but I wanted to describe how I came to love and buy my Cort B4 fretless.

While I like to browse in music stores, I am not an impulsive buyer. Back in 2002, I was in a big chain store, kicking tires with no real interest in making a purchase. I wasn't even playing with a group or playing actively at the time. But when I started to play the B4 Fretless I was stunned. The tone was so warm, but also it could growl just enough. The tone was flexible. The neck felt great with easy action. It was instant ~ I loved the bass and I was stunned because I had always thought of Corts as cheap POS's. I didn't believe I could fall for a cheap bass so easily. I had never instantly clicked with an instrument that cost less then 4 figures before, and those were always way too expensive for me, but this bass: cheap! but played like a bass three to four times it's price.

I kept pulling other fretless basses off the wall at the store, thinking that the Cort couldn't really be that much better than the other mid-priced basses on display, but it did.

Again, not being spontaneous, I left the store without the bass that day, but returned the next day, felt the same way, and bought the instrument for less than $500. Best value I've ever gotten.

Since then, it's still my main bass. I bought an A4 with frets so I'd have a fretted instrument with the same neck feel and close to similar tone, and it feels good, but as you might expect, it lacks the warmth of the fretless (I'm going to put some flat rounds on it to take some of the brightness out of the A4).

So, until I can afford a $2000 bass, I'll stick with my Corts (or maybe I'll stick with them then, too ;-).
