Hi

I'm after advice, that will probably be biased from this thread

I've recently taken up Bass Playing Again after a 10 plus year gap and have resurected my old Hohner Proffesional (Don't laugh). As i'm learning again and always wanted a five string thats not too expensive a couple of options came up the Cort GB75 as one and the Tribute L2500 as another

I've just noticed the Artisan line and wonder how this compares to the L2500?

Is it worth saving up for the A5 over theGB75?

i was after info/advice on what people think of this as a 5 and there experiences of using it.

Thanks in advance

as far as the gb 75 someone else will have to chime in but I own both the A5 and the B5 and the main difference is the A5 is a neck through and seems a bit punchier then the B5,which has a full wenge neck and feels warmer to me. the A5 has a wenge/maple neck.
Both offer the bartolini MK1 pick ups and pre, which do a nice job for overall tone.
you can't go wrong either way,but the gb will offer some different tonal options with the j/mm pick up config, most people like the mighty mite's,but some aren't fans...

+1

As an owner of both (A5 & GB75), I can say that I prefer the GB75 (not because it's the most recent bass of the two), but because of the overall amount of sheer versatility in the range of tones you can achieve. The A5 is great - it's got a beautiful finish and the neck is one of the thinnest, fastest necks (front to back depth) I've ever played on a 5-string bass. It sounds great, but to me it has a sound that is more modern & not quite as low-end supportive in the mix as the GB75. But this is probably attributed to the Bart MK-1 pickups - a set of US-made Barts would benefit the A5 for sure. Plus, it's hard to beat a bass with Jazz pickups (let alone a splittable MM-style pickup) for a classic punchy groove & a low-end support-oriented type of sound. The slap sound on the GB75 is also more old school - like a great 70's type of J Bass slap tone. Hard to beat - and this is with the stock MightyMite pickups mind you - drop in your favorite Barts, Nords, Duncans, what-have-you, and forget about it. The GB75 hands down - from a tone versatility standpoint. Even with upgrading the pickups on the GB75, you'd still be a hair under or right at the cost of an A5. That said, keep in mind that the front-to-back & side-to-side neck thickness of the GB75 is greater than that of the A5, but still comfortable & easy to get around on, IMO. Although the A5 (with pup upgrade) would be a killer bass with easier playability, the GB75 would still yield that bigger range of tones I keep rambling on about.

In short, the A5 is beautiful, neck-thru, slimmer body contour, more modern tone, faster playing neck, but could stand better pups. The GB75, thicker neck dimensions, more supportive & familiar classic tones & versatility of tones with the stock pups - could stand pup upgrade depending on your tastes, but overall less expensive to purchase.

I have not played a Tribute L2500, but can tell you (if you didn't already know) that Cort makes the Tribute line for G&L, FWIW. I have heard they are built rock-solid, and I have read nothing but glowing reviews about the playability & tone of the L2500 - so that's a tough one for me to comment on. As with anything of course, having the chance to A/B them both (if possible) is the way to go.

Hope this helps to some extent. :)

The more i look at the GB75 the more i want one :hyper:

I did know that cort make the tribute and i think that is why i am coming round to the GB75 as i like the mm pickup and the addition of a J is a nice combo and i'm sure i can get some good sounds out of it :bassist:

Thanks again

Cort makes everything. My Ibanez SR506 was made in the Cort factory, my Cort A5 was made there (weird huh? :P) and the L2500 Tribute I traded it for was also made there. I believe the Lakland Skylines might also be made there, as they use Bart MK1s which seems to be a staple of the Cort factory, but I can not confirm this.

Can I join the club? (Heck, my bass *looks* like a club, or perhaps a paddle.)

Cort headless bought new in 1985. Has some truss rod issues, but works fine. Sweet bass after all these years.

I also had the headless P-bass for a while, I'll see if I can find some photos of it. It was nowhere near as cool as this though.

I will say this, I own a lakland 44-02, and it was like a whole new world opened up when I starting using the j/mm config, your gonna love it!!!

also, the MK1's are only in the 01 models of the skylines, the 02's offer the Lakland LH3 ...and TRUST me it's a HUGE difference...

My headless P bass just arrived. For what I paid, I'm damn impressed. The tuners are smoother than any other bass I own. The neck feels great and the pickup seems as good as any big name brand.

The only problems is I have to replace the tone pot, I'll probably just re-do the entire electronics. I also need to make an adapter for the strings at the top of the neck. I want to be able to use standard strings. That will be an easy project. It also needs a new, more happenin' lookin' pickguard :bassist:

Lastly, this aint no little headless bass! It's a full size P body......in size AND weight!! I just has no headstock

Pics ASAP

the neck is what is worrying me about the Tribute and pushes me to the GB75

I don't know the neck dimensions on the Tribute, but the GB75 is not exactly the thinnest I've ever played. Don't get me wrong, very comfortable, but there are definitely thinner out there. Maybe I'm just spoiled on the A5 neck dimensions. Perhaps I can get some A/B pics of the necks between the two & a couple of measurements on the GB75 at the nut & 22nd fret if it helps in any way.

remember folks, as soon as you post pics I'll send you off a number for the club.....

also, I'm selling my A5 in the classified's if anyone is interested.I promise to make you a good deal, as I need to get rid of some stuff and I want to see this go to someone who will enjoy it. just send me a PM.I know I know, why would I sell it??
I still have my B5 which I just prefer for the wenge neck and overall feel,so I'm not out of the club. I'm also putting an OBP-1 in it this weekend, and possibly a new set of p/u's,and will be ordering a GB-75 after I pay for my dr bass cab.

Loving those Corts, keep em coming!!!

First thing on my list for tomorrow is to pick up some nice stainless pickguard screws. :eyebrow:

My idea of making a standard string adapter isn't going to work unless I modify the saddles as well. They are all sized for the exposed core strings. No biggie, I guess I'll just buy Steinberger strings ;)

I spent a little time adjusting the string height and pups. This baby plays NICE!!! :bassist:

The GB75 neck measurements are as follows:

Width at nut: 1 3/4"
Width at 22nd fret: 3"

Back of neck to top of fretboard (as best as I can measure): 3/4"

The neck of the GB75 is what I consider a flattened "C" shape. In the neck profile image below (although really for gui***) it appears most like the "D" shape, only thinner back-to-front. A comfortable neck to play on, just a bit wider (side-to-side) feeling than a lot of uber-skinny necks that I've played before. But then, I find more space is better for slap technique for sure.

FWIW, my A5 has the same 1 3/4" nut measurement, but only widens out to 2 5/8th" at the 24th fret. So, both necks start the same width at the nut, but the GB75's neck spreads out roughly 1/4" more by the time it reaches the 22nd fret.
