know people always say that the music industry's always been crap, but come on, look a Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, I may not be a fan of some of these bands, but I think they have all been considered fairly mainstream, but they built their careers on being different. I dare anyone to name a band that came out in the past 10 years that has come close to touching any one of these bands. Double dog dare ya.
My wife thinks that the 80's was the last truly innovative period in popular music. I'm inclined to agree with her.
I think the delivery medium continues to turn the industry on it's head, though. Used to be "quality control" was left to the record companies. Like that or not, they were at least looking at skill/talent as part of the equation. With today's $0.99-cent-(or free-)per-download mentality, any tom, dick, or harriet can put their wares out there and go viral. Without decent music education, though, how people judge what's "good" or not is largely left to the same sorts of criteria from which a kid gets elected to class president...

This is depressing, I think I'll go listen to some Rush, or Beethoven, or something.
