what I wasn't expecting was for them to look quite so cool, which is a crying shame that Gibson don't make them any more when they got something very right with a bass. I know mine aren't exact copies, there are a few subtle differences but they are close enough for me to see that. Besides, I'm their mum

Limped into the workshop again today for a couple of hours. I just roughed out the back of the necks to a flat D, I'll finish them off to a C either tomorrow or Tuesday. My hand is sore as well after rubbing on my crutches while I'm walking so it's causing me discomfort while using hand tools; not a happy bunny on the whole at the moment

I’ve only done one volute so far, painfully slow, careful nibbling away with files and scrapers. I had a hard time picturing the process until I did it. Came out pretty good, but I did “overcarve” the transition to the neck profile a hair, you can’t “un-carve” it! It’s barely visible, but I can feel it with my thumb.
Their funny things, I'm not totally sure if i like them, I know they're not actually needed with a good scarf joint. On balance over carving them would suit me fine
I actually like the decorative aspect, and mine was a Ric build, those head stocks are pretty weak with no scarf joint, so I added a volute. It gives me a nice tactile “end” to the neck too, I kinda anchor there too.
I've noticed that newer TBirds have that feature. Wish mine had had it when it got knocked over. Maybe it wouldn't have cracked-or at least not as badly.
They are certainly useful when the headstock is cut from the solid with the neck. I find it strange that Makers such as Gibson make their necks that way instead of using a scarf joint, the joint doesn't really add that much time to the build, well I say that but I suppose in a production environment it probably does. Still it's a stronger method of joining the headstock. I may have mentioned I once made a couple of test pieces years ago to see which was strongest, I cut one of each and then stood on them. The Gibson type headstock just broke but the scarf joint held my weight, to me that speaks volumes
