The K140's sounded really good, but I don't have much to compare them too. Through the years I haven't owned that many speaker cabs. I bought the K140's in '77, so I suppose by now they're suffering a bit from the natural ravages of time just like old books or old anything else. Things tend to decompose even without use. That is a consideration I have about old gear. I suppose they could be fine, but I would personally have a tendency to baby them a bit, which may just be irrational over concern on my part. Of course, if they were reconed with the correct parts, they probably would be as good as new. One of mine needs to be reconed anyway. At one time BB King's bass player used them in a large concert venue and you could see the dust caps moving behind the grill cloth, so mine have been worked hard a few times. But to answer your question, I loved the way they sounded.

Back to Mu-Tron.

My Mu-Fx Octave Divider finally arrived. Here's my initial thoughts having played around with it for a couple of hours. It's a lovely, warm & thick super fat sounding pedal. It sounds HUGE on bass. I'm loving the Green Ringer effect combined with the Octave gives you a chunky, dirty robotic effect. Pretty unique sounding.

For an analogue filter it tracks pretty well too, (better than my OC-2 on a par with the Foxrox Octron). The Octave Divider glitches a bit on the lower notes if you sustain them, but not in an unpleasant way. I found that rolling back on the tone control on my bass helps the tracking further. I also really gotta work better on controlling my playing dynamics & clean technique.

Combined with the Mu-Tron 3x or vintage Mu-Tron III, the Octave Divider really comes into its own, beefing up the filter to become even fatter and more syrupy.

One small gripe is the power supply. My Octave Divider did not like the 12v AC U.S. power supply through a US>UK travel adapter, but it works fine with either the EU two pin power adapter my Mu-Tron 3x came with and the UK three prong AC-AC 12v 500ma Stontronics supply I bought for the Mu-Tron. I've got another one on the way now to permanently power the Octave Divider.

Anyway, aside from the power supply fun and games, the Octave Divider is another tremendous pedal from Mu-Fx.

On another subject how are you vintage Mu-Tron III owners powering your Mu-Trons? I have one of these on the way from CAE sound: Mutron III Power Supply
I went for this one as it can operate on a wide range of input voltages (90-260 VAC, 47-63 Hz) and you can connect it to the mains via any AC computer cord, so will be UK power supply friendly. Just hoping it does the job, as don't want to run the Mu-Tron on 2 9v batteries all the time.

By the way reading through some earlier posts, a couple of you commented how much you like the gritty overdriven tone on the Mu Tron III by using the gain without the filter kicking in. I just gotta say I totally dig this sound too. It really is the Daddy of all filters!

I got a pedal made by John Kallas that is just the gain stage of a MuTron III it's great and always on.
I just use two 9v on my MuTron III.

K140's are very conservatively rated. I've often pushed a pair of mine hard with a 700 watt amp with no issues.
it's the d140's that can't take much power.
one of the cool things about them is that they're also very efficient so they require less power than most of today's 'modern' speakers.

The gain is great. Really unexpected. It's less clean sounding than the gain on the Tru Tron 3x, but that's exactly why I like it. How long do your 9v batteries last on average in your Mu-Tron III? The ancient instructions I got with mine say that one 9v battery will last up to three times longer than the other? (the red lead one is shorter life due to "unequal drain")

The gain is awesome. I would love to buy John's version but I think it's honestly way too expensive for what it is. So I am trying to find someone else to build it for me.

I power my Mutrons with the stock power supply but would love to buy a more universal one.

When I ordered earlier today it showed in stock. I'm suspecting more than a few of us need these.

As I posted way earlier in this thread, my mid-70s Mutron III was modified 'stereo' ala Ric-O-Sound (bridge pup effected / neck pup straight through) and has a blend pot. This work was not done by me. The mod allowed me to not lose all my low end when engaged AND IT WORKED. Lost my power supply a long time ago (think it died), so I've been hoping to find a correct power supply to see if the unit still functions. I have a couple of ideas on how to cable this up, and suspect that a standard T/S cable shorts out the + signal. I'm going to make 2 variations on a T/S to T/R/S to see if my hunch is correct. To refresh memories...

Needs some cleaning up as it's been sitting on a shelf in my shop for over 25 years. It was also modified to mount to a microphone stand, so I could make adjustments song-to-song without squatting.

That's one funky looking Mu-Tron! Intrigued to hear what it sounds like if you can get it working. Fingers crossed that power supply works out.

Hey Mosfed, those Mu-Tron III power supplies are back in stock at CAE Sound. Mine arrived today, works great, really pleased with it as I found the batteries were draining pretty quick. It's basically the same three pin connector that the original PS-1 power supply had, so just make sure you have the same three pin socket on your Mu-Tron.

dude! Thanks so much. Going to order now. Two of my Mutrons have the three pin adapter. So that's great news. Btw- will these take DC as well? That would be too awesome for words....
