The Official MTD USA Thread

Got this bass two weeks ago and all I can say is WOW! The tone on this is amazing. Punchy, huge low end and the cleanest high end of any bass I've owned (or heard for that matter). Tulipwood, Myrtle Burl and Wenge/Wenge. Its doing that classic Tulipwood thing and then some!! The Fit and finish is PERFECT and the playability is OFF THE CHARTS. I thought my MTD#329 was the end-all-be-all! Well, Mike out did himself on this baby! This one will be with me for a long, long, long time! Now I'm thinking a GK1001 head and NEO 4x10/2X12 may be a better TONE fit for this bass than my SM-900 and Pair of Goliath Jr's....hmmmm. Played through the GK rig and was real impressed!

GK and MTD go together like Strawberry and Rhubarb in a pie. :D

That's my favorite MTD color combo. If I can ever save up enough money one day I'll get one. You're very lucky.

Congrats, and let me tell you that #329 is in good hands!!! ;)

Hey guys !

I'm a newbie when it comes to MTD's... I'm selling my Warwick Streamer LX 5 Custom Shop, and I've been proposed a trade with an MTD 535, Korina body, Wenge/wenge neck and fretboard. It's from 1996, and it has a few cosmetic wear.

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I've never played an MTD in my life... What can you guys tell me about that wood combination? It's sad it ain't got no "classy" top.

I've no idea of how it sounds, and I can't play it since the guy lives quite far.

Thanks a lot !

My 435 has the same wood combo. I'd say it's a fairly darker tone, but with clear, crisp highs, full low end, and present but not overpowering mids. The korina, IME, is pretty lightweight also and wears comfortably if you're gigging. My only complaint, simply for personal preference, is that it could sound more aggressive, if you know what I mean. That said, I'll never get rid of mine.

Hi Tom,
My local repair guy told me this as I showed up my bass to him. I will never try something on the finish by myself as it could damage it.
He told me mine deserved a slight refinish, but I think only Mr T. is the most qualified to do this.

Don't try to do this thing at home kids!

Oups, I mean this Mr T. of course:

WOW the 1000 post limit!

Best I've seen of Mr. Tobias.

Cheers,

Bit of a long post here, but it has been an interesting ride, so thought I'd share it with you good people.

I've been doing quite a bit of the buy/sell/trade lately in a deliberate effort to try some new things out there as far as ultra-luxo 5-ers and 6-ers. In my transactions, I ended up with an MTD 535-24. Playability, tone, attention to detail and pure functionality just blew me away. Been playing Electric Bass for over 30 years and have never played an instrument that had so much cleverness designed into it as Mike's MTD USA models.

As much as I loved my new (to me) 535, I had to try some others to be sure the woods were the right ones. I ended up selling my Buckeye/Mahogany bodied Maple/ebony necked 535-24 to help fund two others...

The first that is incoming is a 635-24 that I had the pleasure of playing at Bass exchange in the SFV, here in LA. Stone-cold Mint condition, this is one of those instruments you play and within five minutes you realize that it is "magic". even for an MTD, this one just had "it". Unique tonewoods, even for an MTD, it has a Blackened Redwood over Black Limba body with a Maple/Ebony neck. Solid midrange articulation with strong lows and glassy, yet smooth highs were mine as I fingerstyled through a new DB751. My Jaw dropped at the beauty, but the tone sold me. Had my wife and daughter with me both giving me the look, so I had to leave after about 15 minutes. A week later I put the down payment in to hold it. I couldn't sleep knowing this was out there.

Formerly owned by Jimmy Ali - not sure why he parted with it, but I look forward to it when it turns up to me in Florida in early September. Upon telling Mike T. about my score, he replied, "Enjoy it, that is actually one of my favorite basses."

Okay, 6-er nailed down, I still craved the 535-24 and its different string spacing. Again the first Buckeye MTD is another one of those amazing pieces that makes you shake your head and wonder how did Mike do it?!? But I craved the tones I heard many in this thread talking about when I read posts on the Walnut/Ash bodied, Ash/Maple FB joints Mike has been releasing of late. A ping to Glenn at Austin Bass Traders revealed he had one coming this past Wednesday hot off the presses from Mike. Many e-mails back and forth with Glenn later, I have put down funds for this fine instrument:

One of the nicest Ash backs I have seen:

It is always tough to buy without playing an instrument, but after e-mailing Mike and talking with Glenn (Both great guys, BTW!) I feel certain this combo will work for me. Mike wrote that the instrument would have a: "bit more percussive attack. the walnut adds a natural compression in the attack that makes the bass burp or cough on the finger attack. it may also be a bit stronger in the mids."

The Walnut Burl is exceptional and the back is absolutely amazing. If sonics are even half of the visuals I'll be in good shape, I'm sure.

Needless to say the funds are burned up pretty good now and some fine gear will have to go to cover, but I really pleased with these finds and expect them to be around for quite a while. I'm sure this won't be my last MTD USA purchase - I have a very bad desire to grab one or two more of these.:hyper::help:

I'll add in more pix when these turn up to my studio and share more tone reports and clips once I start tracking with these! I just had to share my excitement with some fellow MTD junkies!

Best,

Mike

Report back when you get this beauty in your hands, but if your experience is like mine, it'll be a keeper for sure. :)

Here's what mine looks like. Mike's mastery is beyond question... :)
