The only problem on my Rick 4001 (1973 from new) has been strings getting old and needing replacing. I bought it new in 1973. A string could have a fault that causes a dead spot possibly.

There really was a dead spot on one of my four Rics, ironically my favorite of the pack, but over the last couple of years the wood kind of "tuned out" of it or something. It's not there anymore, but when the bass was new, no amount of work could seem to fix it. Once I stopped caring it disappeared. Figures!
