Question(s):

Are there string type and or size limitations for Rickenbacker 4001 and or 4003 series basses?

I'm a flat wound fan and looking for my first Rickenbacker. But I want the model that can take both rounds and flat's.

I believe that one can and one can't!

Please advise.

It should be perfectly fine to use both rounds and flats on the either the 4001 or 4003. As long as you know how to adjust the truss rods for the particular bass, there really is no problem.

Both the 4001 and the 4003 handle rounds and flats well. While I'm a flats fan too, I do prefer rounds (DR LoRiders .045-.105) on my '74 4001 and keep the flats for my Fender Jazz.

I just put some chromes on one of my Rics. I really like the sound!

It "mellows" out the extreme brightness that some 4001's tend to have, so it's nice. And it works well with a pick as well!

Hate to sound like a baby but .. by the end of the evening the binding of my 4003 hurts my right arm. i want to grab my file and make an arm contour. anyone ever do that? (i did it to a Dirnt slab body Tele/P bass .. came out pretty good.) my band mates think i'm nuts

nah, pretty normal if you are not used to the binding. I would not grind it off though.

I agree with jaymi I don't think you should grind it off. I'd try some fine sandpaper and just knock the sharp edge of the binding down a bit and try to add some slight roundness to the edge where it cuts in.

...or change the height that you sling the bass or your arm position a touch. I don't ever have any issues with that. The body is so thin to begin with.
