The Samick Club

I really like that Thunderbolt. At first I thought changing the chrome hardware would be best with that color, but I can definitely see black working well, too.

I put a Babicz Full Contact bridge on my Samick Custom. Fender string spacing matches, so that was the model I used. Available in several finishes, mine is black. It made it so much more resonant through the body, you literally feel more where it contacts your hip. I had to change most of my favorite amp presets because they no longer sounded the same. It was a profound difference.

I have come across this bass for £35 what do you guys think... should I pull the trigger?

I have done a bit research. I think it’s a JB420 3 tone sunburst. According to the serial I think it was made in October 1993.

it is the ONLY Samick I have seen with an exposed truss rod. I don’t like the headstock or the truss rod, but could maybe look past that.

The truss rod nut isn't supposed to stick out! I have a feeling it's been stripped once and then replaced.

Still, for 35 GBP... might as well - if you need another bass.

Good to know, thanks. That is the bridge I would love to put on the Thunderbolt, but it’s a bit pricey. I’m still considering it.
As for replacement pickups, do you know of any specific upgrade options that will match in size/measurements?

yeh something ain’t right about it! I certainly don’t need another bass, but this is very very cheap! Too cheap not to consider! I’m getting the seller to send me more pictures of the neck and fretboard.

I hope that truss isn’t completely loose and sliding about!

Hello! Recently I've been searching for a budget friendly fretless bass and I found this one locally for approximately 270$:

I can't find anything about this particular Samick, so any info would be really helpful. Is it worth it?

Thanks, Karlo

I'm not sure I've ever even seen a fretless Samick from that era or one with angled pickups! I don't see it as being a bad buy. Best way to know if it's right for you is to try it. I do see one other one for sale online for 300 Euro as well.

Thought I would post pictures of my Samick SAKB 477 here for reference before it's gone (selling locally). I bought it new in 2001. I went to the Arlington, Texas, guitar show in 2000 and played one in the Samick booth. I liked its looks and lightweight, balanced body. There were none for sale at the chain music stores, and I had to go to a small mom-and-pop store outside the city where I special-ordered it. Once I got it home, I didn't like the sound, so I replaced the soap bar pickup with a Carvin stacked humbucker. While I was at it, I replaced the white pickguard with pearloid and went from three control knobs to two. I gigged with it for a few years before moving on to other basses.

Cool bass. Why not sell it on the Talk Bass classifieds? More options for folks to buy.

Hi Rod..how is ya lol..The young guy (Macca_man) posted over on this part of the forum on Wednesday (see link I posted below)..have a look at the bass..looks nice so I hope he enjoys playing it and he has a great time here on TB. It is a Samick and I posted that I bought a Samick for my son late 90's when he was learning bass and I have inherited the Samick when my son left home..it sits on the stand now alongside my Ric and StingRay..the Samick is a pretty well made bass actually..his teal green P style bass looks very nice, after-all Samick is still one of the largest manufacturers of guitar parts etc in the world.

Hiya Giffro! Long time, and hope you are even better than can be expected!

I followed your link over, and @Macca_man seems to have good taste in bass. I hope he posts pics of his real instrument, instead of just pics of a similar one.

My Samick is a short scale P-bass with sunburst finish, and I bought it for embarrassingly low money. Got a great deal on the leather gig bag for it too.
