After having a couple of days with the red sled, I ordered the Labella flats, when they come in I'll bring the bass to my local Luthier, and have them set it up proper. I have no amp, as this was bought purely as a personal enjoyment piece. I noticed the noise of the round wounds, and the floppy E and decided to go flat as it should tame the twang.
Question, is filing sprouted frets part of a normal "set up"?

Beside the tone, this is what i like about the LaBella DTB 760FM-P's
I finished up my new Mini P project and it turned out very, very good. I ended up swapping out the Dimarzio model P pickup for a Bartolini B-Axis passive pickup. The Dimarzio just had to much midrange and not enough lows on the mini. This Bartolini pickup sounds much fuller with good lows, mids & highs. One very subtle thing I did on this build is that I used Black screws for everything (bridge, string retainer, pickups, neck plate, pickguard & tuner backs) I have it strung up with D'Addario EXL170S short scale nickel rounds 45-100. I'm very happy with this Mini

I'm a guitar player and recently picked up a used mini for a great price. It wouldn't have been my first color choice, but for the price I couldn't pass it up. Thinking about re-spraying it vintage white..
I'd like to put some flatwound strings on it. Are the LaBella 760FM-P string for this bass less floppy than the stock roundwounds?

That's the set I put on mine. I think the feel fine, not floppy at all. I honestly don't remember how the stock rounds felt though.
I got my 14 year old daughter this very bass earlier this year to start teaching her bass. She loves hers.

I did some upgrades over the weekend.
Swapped in a set of Fender Original 62 pickups. Sounds really nice, but in all honesty the stock pickup didn't sound that bad.
Applied some gloss wipe-on poly to the headstock. It shined it up nice, but also revealed a lot of rough sanding marks that the factory matte finish was covering up.
Put on a set of LaBella 760FM-P flatwounds. These seem to be heavier than the factory strings and I lowered the action a bit. Just curious what string height others are running with these strings.

Same set on mine. 3/64" at the 17th fret (E) and 2/64" at the 17th
I think that's a tad lower than Fender specs iirc
Thanks. Right now I've got mine at 7/64 on the E. Fender spec is 6/64 for this radius. If I go much lower I get the strings slapping the frets when I pick (with pick or fingers). I'm a guitar player and not a bass player, so maybe it's technique? There is a fair amount of relief, so I don't think it's too flat.
Anyway, I'm loving this bass. Can't stop playing White Wedding haha

I used the 3/8" Hipshot ultralites and they were a tad tight on this mini but I wrapped a piece of sandpaper around a marker pen and a few turns in each hole and they were a perfect fit with no play.

Hi Mini P fans,I am an amature luthier who has modified a few basses.Mini p is my fav.I recently set out to go out of the box and build my own style neck to fit.I have defretted 2 mini Ps now.I love how they play,feel,and sound.My new neck build is a Fretless 28.6 inch scale with Mahogany neck,with a lined walnut fret board,and satin natural finish.I use D Adario black tape wound strings.It has a tilt back headstock,black Hip shot ultra light clover tuners, and hardware.I’m gonna strap this on one of my Mini P’s and see how it looks and plays.If I am succesful I plan on building these for interested people,at a fair price.I have pics of my progress in TB Luthiers corner.Please send me a note if you think you might be interested in one.Thanks…RICK
You've inspired me to do a fretless Mini so I'm keeping my eyes out for a 2nd one.
Hoping there'll be Black Friday deals or maybe I'll run across a used one for a good price.
I got my first Musicmaster in the late 90's, the pre-internet days as we know them now.
I heard many comments about them being "toys, cheap, economy grade, kid's starter, etc" all the time. Much less now that there is so much information about short scales now and more folks use them.
They play so smooth,Good luck ,defretting isn’t that hard.I used credit card blanks to fill my fretslots.
