I think laurel is fine too but it has always been EXTREMELY dry on every Squier I've seen. I don't think I've ever seen a fingerboard soak up oil in the same way as my laurel Squiers, including some rather neglected 90 years old acoustic guitars I inherited. Give it some oil and it will look a lot better It won't turn into the dark reddish color of rosewood but it will change from that pale flaky old chocolate look to a much warmer brown and the darker patterns in the wood will pop out more.
Just be careful with the oil. It's tempting to apply more when the fingerboard soaks it up so fast but don't overdo it, I've had some pretty bad experiences with too much oil. Lesson learned.
I picked up my Mini P today ! After tuning and a quick loosen of the trussrod, I'm happy to report no fret buzz. Floppy strings was my biggest concern when buying one.
Treble notes tend to ring out loud, compared to bass notes, but for the cost it sounds great. I'm sure a bit fiddling with pickup heights can minimize this minor issue.
All in all I'm very happy with my new baby bass!

If you check carefully on Squier laurel board, it has a light tint or coat on the surface. This cause the minwax stain can't soak in to the wood like rosewood board on earlier Squier bass.
The Sterling sub ray and Cort also has similar coat but in brown colour instead dry grey on indo Squier CV bass.
And the mini pbass I see from here and sweet water list has deep brown fretboard.

I think all GHS short scale sets are 32.75".
Based on the 30" basses I own I think we can rule out Pyramid, LaBella and Thomastik short scale sets too. All of them have the windings VERY close to the tuning pegs on regular 30" short scale basses. All of them seem to have slightly above 32" winding length. Thomastik even a bit longer. Many short scale sets are designed to fit short scale basses with short tail pieces too which means they are actually more like medium scale winding length. And the short scale strings designed for basses with longer tailpieces are obviously even worse...
Not sure about Rotosound but their short scale strings are very, very poor IMO so not really worth investigating.
D'Addario Chromes are 30" I think (not 100% sure). Probably as close as it gets with regular short scale strings. Other D'Addario short scale sets seem to be 32".
LaBella seems to make sets for all kinds of basses, at least the Deep Talkin Flats. They HAVE to as these strings will break if the windings are strung through body or wrapped around the tuning pegs. I wouldn't be surprised if they came up with something special for mikro scale basses... But then again, maybe not. It's a very small niche unless mikro scale basses become a lot more popular. And not everyone wants flats.
Well I guess they forgot that coating on my Cort manufactured Squier Bass VI that I purchased recently and oiled last week then. I've never seen a fretbord soaking up oil that fast. 100% definitely no coating on that fretboard. And the laurel looked much nice afterwards. Practically glowing compared to before I oiled it.
I don't know how the board on your bass Iv.
But the jotoba on Ibanez SR3xx absolutely bare , much easily to stain or wipe poly coat.Has better result than Squier laurel board.

Yeah, jatoba looks nicer than laurel, I totally agree with you there. A good quality jatoba board can be absolutely stunning. Beautiful wood. I just don't dislike laurel as much as you.
anyone think about swaping bridge to a thru body? would help find strings i'm thinking
One pet peeve I have is, the micro sized strap buttons. Even plastic strap locks fall off of them.

I have replaced lots of strap buttons myself.
But those rubber gasket strap stoppers will hold any button and strap in place.

I'm about to cook up some black rit dye for the pickgaurd. I'll post a pic of how it turns out.
first one to mass out a few black pickguards will make a killing
The nut is indeed 38mm (Bronco is 40mm)
You can also see how my (factory) E string is curved between the nut and tuner. I'm sure it doesn't effect anything, but it bugs me, aesthetically.
The string spacing is 18mm
