TL;DR? Scroll down to #5.
I've learned:
1) A lot more about gear than I ever would have learned without Talkbass. Sure, that knowledge has helped me spend (waste?) a lot more money buying and selling lots of gear and trying out different things than I probably would have without it. But it also helped me learn more about what I like and why I like it so I'm now quite happy with what I have and am finally starting to sell off the things I decided aren't keepers.
1a) A related nugget of knowledge is "Less eBay, more Mel Bay." I wish I could remember who I saw use that first so I could give them credit. The vast majority of people here can play circles around me yet I probably have "better" gear than a lot of those people. But at least I realize that "better" gear alone isn't going to make me a better player.
2) That with bass playing, as with anything else you can learn to do, there is no shortcut to improvement. Hard work, acquiring knowledge, and expanding your skills are the only way to get there.
3) That this is a great time to be a bass player. The quality of gear at budget price points is quite good, at higher price points there's some *amazing* gear, and the internet has great resources to help you learn (if you adequately sort the useful from the nonsense). Had I gotten serious about playing when I was a teenager instead of in my late 40's, I probably would have had a much different experience than I'm having now.
4) TB is part of internet and therefore there are lots of people here who'll get angry at you regardless of what you say or what you play, make asses of themselves with no provocation, and come down on you for the littlest thing. Despite that, TB'ers are actually a pretty good group. I've gotten to know quite a few people via posts in threads and others via PMs and I've also done a fair amount of buying and selling here, including meeting several TB'ers in person to complete deals, and they've all been great people.
5) If I took half the time I've spent on TB and put that time into practicing, I'd probably be a shockingly talented player by now.
