Thunderbird Club

As the year winds down, I'm just curious to know what your #1 bass is, and if it changed from last year. My #1 this year and last year is one I had the body and neck made and bought all the parts and had assembled:

This one.................It's been played twice as much as all the others put together, it's just that good to me. I still marvel at the fact that I own it.

:wideyed:...any songs in particular? trying to imagine Floyd on a T-Bird..
To tickle your imagination, in the community concert band I'm in, we had our "Holiday Concert" Tuesday night. I played-on the 67-"Star Spangled Banner", "Selections from 'Nutcracker Suite'", "Three Moods of Hanukkah", "Sleigh Ride", "Troika" from Lt. Kije, "Christmas Medley(4 songs)", "Jingle Bell March"(novelty), 2 or 3 others I don't remember, and "God Bless America". And I've played a coupla PF songs in the past with other groups.
As someone here has said: Thunderbird-a tool for all reasons.

Some of the pre DSOTM stuff but mostly songs from DSOTM, WYWH, The Wall, Division Bell, and some Gilmour stuff after they split up. To my ears most of those songs sound P bass-ish and I’d put the Tbird in the P bass centric camp. Also, don’t forget, I’m really not playing out hardly at all anymore, and I’m not in any tribute band, so there’s no perfect visual or sonic match goal on my part, I’m just happy to hit the notes correctly.

I’m all over the place with my birds as well. I don’t find them limiting at all. I have a few basses that sound so unique that I use them on specific songs or genres (ie Dano Longhorn, FrankenGoth, Fender MP Tele, Bass Ukulele) but even then it’s out of preference not necessity. I have yet to find a song that one of my Tbirds just flat out can’t work on.

Never have my Tbirds been the limiting factor in my playing, the limiting factor is ALWAYS my lack of ability and talent. As much as I suck (can’t pick, can’t slap, can’t sight read, and with my arthritis I can’t even do a five fret reach in first position anymore) I’m still having fun doing what I can do. There’s a reason I’m in the Crappy bassists with Expensive Gear Club.

I thought it was you that I paraphrased.

Love that White Tbird, very unique and classy with the red accents. Never owned an Ibby bass but have played a few at GC. They always seemed to be a lot of bass for the money. How would you say yours differs in sound from the white/red bird?

That's a tough comparison, they're so different.
Being 2-pickup bass guitars is about all they have in common.

The sr885le is lightweight (basswood, allegedly) - it's the lightest bass i have at 7lbs. 12oz., bolt-on 3-piece maple neck, uncoated Ibanez SS strings (atm, new DRs waiting to go on when these die), EMG Rip Tide j-pickups with BTS eq (9v).

The Classic Pro is one of the heaviest basses I have, 2 lbs. more than the Ibanez (mahogany, allegedly), neck-through 7 layer? walnut/mahogany, coated DR nps strings, 2016 TB+ pickups with passive electrics.

That being said, imo the Ibanez has more bottom end (even discounting the B-string), and less (high?) mids than the Thunderbird.
The active electronics makes it easy-ish to get them similar, though, and also tends to make the SR it a bit more aggressive. Especially since I usually run it in the standard amp input :D

I've been working with the drummer in the current group for ~10years(?). His background is jazz. I've tried to get us doing accents, triplets, and other [stuff] together. Nope. So I give up.

ADDENDUM: by "give up", I mean I'll play figures when I think they're appropriate whether he does or not. If I feel he's about to do something I'll try to go with it-maybe. There's one ending in a song I sing that 'calls for' descending eighth notes. He plays triplets against it which doesn't really fit and I can't ask him to change-while I'm singing it. Aaaarrrggh!

I used to play with a guitarist who was right out of the Link Wray/Chuck Berry school of guitar playing. He got a gig playing at a mall somehow or other but it came with a caveat, we had to play with a drummer and a piano player who were older than us and were stone jazz players. Great at what they did but play straight, nope. It got so bad a few times we both looked at each other and burst out laughing.

My #1 since I got it has been my white CP, but that's up in the air now with the Greco here. We'll see.
