Thunderbird Club

I could share my older brothers friends thots from 1976 on this matter, but I don't think anybody really wants to hear it.

Don't get me wrong - I have huge respect for Geddy and Rush - primarily late Rush compared to early Rush. Amazing players all. And Geddy is a cool guy and when he explained why he sang that way I totally got it. I've just never been a fan, own no Rush recordings and am not drawn to his voice. In '74, I was listening to The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles, Weather Report and other electric jazz/rock (& King Crimson, Gentle Giant, early Yes) so it wasn't that I was adverse to prog by any means. Just personal taste I guess.

Same here. I was only 10 in 1974, but was much more drawn to yes and my sister's weather report albums that I was to rush. Maybe it has something to do with melodies?

Whether from rock-to-jazz or jazz-to-rock - it was all under the same roof being 'progressive'. Even the maligned 'fusion' term was just another way of saying progressive, a meeting/blending of both genre's. Much of rock that proceeded prog was on the way there. Wishbone Ash, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Jethro Tull - for sure Cream and Captain Beefheart from an avaunt-guard perspective. Prog rock and Fusion jazz were the logical next step.

Honestly I loved the dynamics, complexity and virtuosity of the jazzers going electric. I'm not generally a fan of redundant 8bar blues based shredder/bombastic rock guitarists but loved John McLaughlin's jazz- based/inspired sophisticated playing/composing.

Hey fellas and ladies,

I’m starting to dabble in bass (guitarist) and really enjoy the instrument quite a bit.

I just got a battered old Orville by Gibson T-bird. Normally I’d play a mustang bass because I love Dee Dee Ramone’s sound when he used one. Also my brother lets me borrow his precision bass.

Anyways, I want to get this sounding closer to a vintage model. It has 89 era Gibson pickups I believe with the ceramic magnets.

I see I’m too late to grab a set from thunderbucker ranch… I want something that gets that vintage grind but isn’t crazy hot.

I see Gibson reissued t bird pickups but only in one output. I’m trying to spend a little less than the Lollar and Lull offerings but the eyguitars pickups I’ve seen mentioned seem like a potential compromise given the lack of potting?

I’ve done quite a few searches and read a lot but I figured I’d see if the Gibson reissues were well regarded? Or what outputs to chase for a more vintage tone?

If the lollars or whatever are really the only ones getting the real vibe I’ll pony up but want to check with the resident experts first.

sorry for the long winded first post. Hopefully I’ll be able to contribute more than questions soon!

Sincerely,
B
I would put the Gibson Alnico reissues in it. Great pickups. A set of two will cost you $260. A bargain. Vintage wound, nicely priced. I put one in my BaCH II Thunderbird and am very hay.

I was at my local GC today and they had this Epi 60's thunderbird and man I was sweating I was so close to buying it. It had a nice flame to the top, great action, great sounding pickups, and NO neck dive!! Someone please buy this before I do
