Thunderbird Club

Don't get me wrong - I have huge respect for Geddy and Rush - primarily late Rush compared to early Rush. Amazing players all. And Geddy is a cool guy and when he explained why he sang that way I totally got it. I've just never been a fan, own no Rush recordings and am not drawn to his voice. In '74, I was listening to The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles, Weather Report and other electric jazz/rock (& King Crimson, Gentle Giant, early Yes) so it wasn't that I was adverse to prog by any means. Just personal taste I guess.
If you were listening to Miles in 1974, Miles was listening to Rush, so… :smug:
What do you mean, “other Miles”? I’m the only one here!

Spouse: "And if the rest of Thunderbird Club jumped off a building, would you?"
TB Member: "Yes. Yes, I would. There had to be a really good reason. So, yes."

So I watched this the other day:

There is a really good discussion around why Geddy always sounds like Geddy. And now I am wondering. Is there also something on YouToob about how to sing like Geddy?

Having seen him from about 8 rows back on 2112 tour I can say he is an amazing talent, as bassist and vocalist. I had seen him prior to that tour and another 4 times after that, you just had to be there to really understand.

...but I agree, you are the only Miles... here. ;)

So far so good? The best production Thunderbird since the 2015 with the tapped DeCola pickups.

The vintage reissue pickups are outstanding. The fit and finish (at least on mine) is exceptional. It looks and plays awesome. The only complaint is that they didn’t go with a two point Epi VP/60’s or a Badbird bridge. Gibson hit a home run with them. Maybe not a grand slam. But they’re great Thunderbirds.
Yeah, but it’s literally been 2 days, you dear enabler. The tuners are already lightweight, so good enough. As you said, the bridge may need some help. But now that I’ve blown most of the money from the sale of unused basses on this and the G3, I should wait until next month to buy a replacement Babicz bridge. I doubt the three-point bridge will rip itself out in that time.

The sound/tone/delivery of singing can evoke a completely involuntary (and utterly honest) aesthetic response from a listener. Doesn't mean the listener has to feel that the band or songs are bad - just that the main point/focus of engagement for most 1st listenings to any music is whichever instrument, primarily, carries the melody or the lyrics (commonly both, of course).
Sometimes it can mean that the listener's response is that they think the music is dreadful, for sure, but it doesn't automatically equate to that. Aesthetics is a peculiar area of art - it's often viewed as being very binary but a large part of post-grad study in teaching music (here in the UK) focussed on strategies to make something students initially recoiled from appealing to them. So, not liking someone's voice/delivery is a really honest response and tho peer-pressure can sometimes prompt a listener to try again (sometimes growing to like the voice) there's no reason why anyone HAS TO LIKE ANY SINGER/VOICE.
I can't listen to Zeppelin because of the singing, love a lot of the music but can't stand Plant's singing on their songs - but I loved the stuff he did with Alison Krauss. I know, sacrilege right!? Geddy I can dig but can easily see why someone else would respond to his singing the way I do to Plant.
I am of a mind it's to a singer's credit to evoke such a response, positive or negative - it proves they've def got their own thing going on!!

Thanks a million!

I was getting a little hung up on the similar impedance in each position (Les Paul player where that’s almost a necessity) but I’ll take the word of the experts. Also the price isn’t bad at all.

Do you have preferred pot values for the 60s tones? I’m seeing some different/conflicting info out there so far.

my three point bridge also may need a replacement. Looks like the a string saddle is kind of jacked up - literally.

Thank you all for the warm welcome
You can ditch the three point and get a chrome Babicz. I prefer it over the Hipshot Supertone. It has more intonation travel and height adjustability. And it looks better. Or you can replace the saddle and screw. Call Gibson. You might be able to get it from them. There are also aftermarket sets of four available on the internet.

I was at my local GC today and they had this Epi 60's thunderbird and man I was sweating I was so close to buying it. It had a nice flame to the top, great action, great sounding pickups, and NO neck dive!! Someone please buy this before I do

I've seen Geddy live many times. And I will be seeing him again in a couple of weeks on his My Effin Life book tour. And already have an autographed copy of his Big Book of Bass.

I listened to almost all the prog of that era. Gentle Giant was pretty far out there. I could only take Shulman’s voice in small doses though. David Surkamp of Pavlov’s Dog was another one that was best listened to in moderation.
