Thunderbird Club

This one started its life as a beat to $#!+ sunburst finish. You can kind of see the chunks missing from the clear coat on the sides and upper edge. Even the pickups had deep wear grooves in them! I bought it for fairly cheap but the modification costs added up quick.

This one showed up with a tort guard that was replaced in less than 5 minutes of the bass arriving at my house.

I'm not a tort hater, but good call!

You are correct on your assumptions. As to why, they may have just had extra .022 caps, or perhaps switched from .022 to .04x.

I know if two resistors are wired in parallel, the value will be reduced by 1/2. Two 2K ohm resistors in parallel equals 1k ohm. I do not know if that equation applies with capacitors.

Blower is supposed to be strapped. Oops

Actually I think it is, otherwise it may have blown way up and came down who knows where…

I think what caught my eye is to the right of the neck, this one goes horizontal for almost an inch before it swoops up. And then there's a bump by the screw. Also the bottom corner left corner below the left edge of the pickup does a hard corner rather than a nice larger radius turn.
The original is such a beautiful design, I hate to see the details get botched.

So much wrong with the shape of that (tort) pg. I studied a number of examples both vintage and otherwise and went the route of a smooth transition on Chucky's NR. It it the 'quietest' visual design and doesn't draw attention to that area.

gotta look that up…many don’t realize what goes on in very close proximity to them in automobiles… remember early Toronados?..

One of the many cars I got to drive before I was 16 with a license. Friend’s parents out of town for the weekend and keys within reach! Big huge front wheel drive burnouts in the back of a local shopping mall parking lot. Summer in Walnut Creek CA 1981!!!

I wasn't focusing on the right side so didn't catch how it was made. Now i can't NOT see it!! The guard on mine is definitely made much better than this tort one.

The curves on this guard flow nicely.

You eliminated the bumps at the neck. I like it.
I sweated over that detail on Ken’s RNR pickguard!

I saw examples of how they could be curled-up at the heal but at least on that tort example - if doing that it needs to be correctly designed to look ok. (which that one clearly looked like a Friday at 4:45pm design dept decision) I think the multiple examples of discrepancies we see were part of Gibson not putting as much focus on their basses than they did on their guitars - "good enough" was probably their mantra.

lucky you! always loved them, the babysitter had a black one, never got to ride in one….455 front wheel drive!..:woot::laugh:

opposite in caps….the values halve in series and double in parallel…….inductors are like resistors….this of course, assumes same component values….regardless, capacitance augments in parallel and decreases in series…
