Thunderbird Club

As an ex-saxist, where every finger presses a key, I need frets. Playing by position doesn't 'cut it' for me.
I played French Horn and my brother played Sax in Middle and High School Band Orchestra and of course The Beatles and British Invasion made us drop those and buy stringed instruments and form a band. My brother was pretty fluid on Sax but not many requests for French Horn…but I do agree fretless or position playing is not my forte!

I picked it up on trombone easily enough but that was 7 rather spread out positions. 20 to 24 in a short space (times 4 or more) is very different. I’m happy with frets. I’m having enough trouble working out the best patterns on some new songs without that variable!

Thank you! We love it.

Our community has been in the national and international news because of bear break-ins the last month. NBC did a Sunday Nightly News feature a few weeks ago. There was a French TV special about it. 2400 residences. We’re at about 70 incidents since April first. There are so many stupid people from L.A. who own here and have no clue about taking proper precautions. It’s maddening. And the Forest Service and California Department of Wildlife are totally underfunded and under staffed to deal with it. It’s primarily due to the previous drought, bears coming out of their natural habitat looking for food and learning how to find it in homes, and people who don’t understand how to secure their properties. I’m still working to bear proof our place.
The problem is that there's quite a bit of overlap in the intelligence level of the smartest bears and the dumbest humans.

I respect your opinion (and I truly do), but as a writer who has often read between the lines, I have the need to play between them. Besides I started off with the cello which has no frets. Btw, what about those woodwind slurs?
Those are done with 'the lip'. Haven't figured out a way to lip up a string.:smug:

I already had a sunburst Thunderbird, but I always kind of craved a white one, and they seem to be one of the rarer "standard" colors, so when I had a little extra money and one popped up on the market, how could I say no?

There's just something very classic about a white Tbird, IMO...

You can't. Because you can't go wrong with a Epi VP... 60s Bass, 64.... I can't keep up. I don't think they have changed the name this month, but whatever they call them, they are fantastic in tone and price.

I clearly remember seeing posts here on TalkBass from people claiming they wouldn't take a 70's 7ender even if you paid them. Willing to bet there are several of those people that have gone on to own said 70's basses since making that proclamation.
Very true. I have a '71 Jazz with the odd spacing (nothing magic and was seeking something of the GL tone at the time), had a '78 P that was heavy and sounded bland so I put DiMarzio's in it and gold hardware and highmass bridge with micro tuners. Had an "A" neck. I loved it after I remade it. I had another 70s for a short while that I modded and later traded. Maybe for the '64 Thunderbird. One very early 80s Jazz. I personally found the 70s to often be heavy (thought my J is light), often sloppy in build quality (even having huge gaps in places), and generally were blah sounding. Just my experience and what I recall from years ago. I'm sure there are some good ones, but I'm actually shocked at prices for them now when they had virtually so little value for a long time and no one sought them out--and now seem to be valuable. Must be just the age, because people who were playing them back then were't all that impressed with them given how modding them was common if not a given my so many. Just my worthless experience! Again, I'm sure there are some good ones out there and that they do what people who own them want from them. That would still be an era I would have no interest in. I guess I would say my experience was that basses before and after the 70s and 80s seem to be better instruments. Pure subjective opinion on my part.

…Antigua… sorry, I just threw up a little in my mouth. I detest that color (especially when it turns baby :poop: green with age). :rollno:
Now that you are aware of the subtle Antigua of that BaCH, you will be looking to sell it soon, correct? :D

I think they may have looked good originally, but after age takes it's very real toll, I just can't. I know Ken likes them, but they are just not for me. Anything with that would get a refinish if staying with me.

In catching up I forgot to mention I think I have the new NR sounding good. Maybe a few more adjustments. Not even in the VP category, but it's sounding much better. SIT Power Wounds, cranked the bridge pickup almost all the way down, leave both volumes at 10. Not much adjusting beyond that during practice last night. Tried goign down with the neck and that didn't work, but the other way seemed to yield some very acceptable tones. We'll see how it does next week. Sunday will most certainly get the '64 or '81 G&L in action. Down one musician, so loving my tone will be at a premium as things will sound less that normal already.

That’s encouraging for you Donnie. I played mine quite a bit on Tuesday and absolutely love the tone from it. Once I get the BaCH pickup routing done, I think those two will be vying to be my No. 2. At this juncture, I think I like the BaCH’s thinner neck a bit better. But my ‘21 NR is a great Thunderbird.

I think I have the vinyl album. I’m still sorting and organizing. Here’s what is in the loft at the mountain place. I’m almost out of room here. That record is likely at the other place. Still a considerable amount of vinyl to move up. And my wife’s CDs.

I hope the structure under that cabinet was built for that loading. I think about how much things weight. It is an affliction.
