Thunderbird Club

Still climbing objects, crawling under houses, walking up 4 flights of stairs with sheets of 3/4" plywood, etc. 56 this summer- my daughter's young men friends are, to me surprisingly soft and pudgy. It's a different paradigm, this generation. I'm glad to keep living in mine.
Ok, this was not to generalize all modern male kids into compromised territory, neither was it meant to be disparaging to any. The comment was kind of self-patronizing as well I guess. But I surmise it's been taken for what it's worth, lol.

I like (most of) my daughters' friends, of both gender types- morphology and disposition notwithstanding. :)

I'm in the same boat. I was 20 until I turned 55. Always kept in good shape and never relied on doctors to keep things in check. That's a distant memory now, bad arthritis in the lower back and right hand. I've found that the longer I sit the worse it gets. No over exertion needed but gotta keep moving and taking over the counter pain killers. I've found golf is a good light duty pastime that keeps all the joints moving.

Gone are the days of half marathons, pickup B'ball or a friendly weekend game of flag football and major yard or construction work is now hired out. Never thought I'd get to that point but when I hit 55 I needed to make some choices to deal with the pain. Will be interesting to hear what your bone doc says. If you find a silver bullet let me know.
Definitely. Just got back from the gym myself, it's been a few weeks- and just when I had gained 5 real pounds! Starting over...

Last few days the right hip has sucked- and is radiating small pains down toward my knee and up to my lower back, same side. Ew.

Funny, my wife had some kind of arthritis so bad she was crawling around in the morning. That was about a year+ ago. Now, it's like it never happened. She's fine. Bizarro...

Between the ages of 22-50, I'm 51 now, I played ice hockey year around. I was a goalie. At 50 my feet started hurting from work. Climbing and standing on step ladders all day has ruined my feet, but the hockey, though it kept me active, has done a number on my knees and hips. Now I play maybe once a month or so. It sucks but I have more time for bass playing now.

Yeah, when I was in the army, I was in much better shape; I used to run marathons. For fun we used to run 10Km with a 40lb backpack. At the same time, I was lifting weights. At 5'7", I weighed 210lbs with only 15% body fat. Running with weights, when you weigh that much it isn't a great idea, my knees aren't so good anymore. I don't run anymore, and I don't lift weights as it is uncomfortable being that big. But I get my exercise on the elliptical trainer, in my kayak, and on the ski hill now. Just got to deal with the aches and pains from having lived an active life. Aleve is great stuff. I'm doing pretty well for an old guy.
Please be careful with the Aleve. It is great stuff, but NSAIDs can wreak havoc on your stomach.

I've tried all the OTC pain killers and have settled on 2 extra strength excederin for headaches and 4 Bayer aspirin for all other aches. Aleve, Advil and Tylenol do nothing for me. Beside the bleeding stomach NSAID issues the other thing you have to keep in mind with some of those OTC pain killers is that some (I think Excederin is one) do serious damage to your liver if you drink alcohol. Of course I only figured that out after years of mixing the two.

Hah, Hah, 'Old Guy'.

I'm 71 this August and have never done ANY extreme exercise since my teen years. I've maintained a BMI under 22 almost all of it. Needless to say, I'm in great shape for a 55 year old. 5-8, 132lbs, 105/79 BP

I don't keep anything in my medicine cabinet except a multi vitamin. There are no chairs in my house or the shop which is funny since I mainly designed chairs. I stand at least nine hours a day, including while eating. I did lift a lot of SVT heads/cabs and 4x8 sheets of MDF in my earlier days.

Your body is a machine, treat it right and it will last a lifetime. Abuse it with unnecessary macho bs (or first world 'exercise') and parts will eventually need replacing. Enjoy your aches and pains, guys, you've earned them.

Just remember, sitting is the new smoking.

Standing desks, that's what I'd be designing if I was still doing furniture.

Sounds like you have really good genes, though.

I have done and continue to do a fair bit of exercise and I have not had a BMI much below 30 since being 20, but I have not been fat - I'm naturally big with muscle. As a marathoner, my race weight was around 180. Like you, I don't have any medication I take regularly. Just pain relievers for the aches and pains from an active life.

I will defend current young people, just as I take pride in keeping up with them. They are no different from what we were like back when, as far as I can tell. It takes some people a while to figure it out. Others figure it out immediately. The pressures and distractions they have now may or may not be easier or harder than any other generation. But, it's different, just as it always is.

It would take me a little while to get back into working shape now that I'm at a desk instead of out in the field, but I can still carry roofing up ladders and dig for a couple straight hours. The difference is that kids get tired, and I head for the old man drugs (aka Aspirin) instead of a cold beer. It's easier to ignore being tired and sore when you are older. It is for me anyway. Plus, there's the pride thing.
Old people have been complaining about young people for thousands of years.

Few of us remain unchanged though this thing called life. ;)
Time wounds all heels.

I just knew it by your tag name, it takes a goalie to figure out a goalie. I retired from playing a little earlier than you for the sake of catching up with playing music. I dont wake up tired and feeling trashed anymore unless I was partying hard, and Im still really awesome at that!.
