Thunderbird Club

It's rusty, but I took a theory class in college once. One funny thing I remember is a little on conducting. The conductor keeps time and if it's done correctly the musicians should be able to tell the what beat they are on of any given timing (and what the timing is). Each timing has it's own movements so the musicians can know exactly where they are. What I have noticed since is that virtually no one does it correctly! The prof was a music PhD and was a classical fanatic.
My junior high and senior high conductors did this but never explained it so various of us started figuring it out and discussed it until we got it.

Thanks for the detail!
And the kind words about my postings.
I try to be engaging and entertaining.
As to the invite to the GTG I am anticipating it: it’ll be fun.

I was in Glendora through high school.
Victorville for a stint.
Played Hollywood / OC / San Bernardino / Santa Barbara / Bay Area through the 90s
Lived in OC from early 80’s through 2008.

Worked at G&L in the 80s
Took a hiatus from music 92-2008.

Relocated to NoCal in 08. San Jose, Fremont, Tracy: bought the house here in 18.
Did a country band with my Ex from 14-20.
My playing back in the day in the OC was pretty much dorm parties, and frat and sorority parties on the Peninsula until the NB police came by to shut us down. Those were the days when the area was mostly a student ghetto from September to Memorial day between the Newport pier and PCH. Good times!

I lived directly across from the Woodstock and Radio City at one time in the early 80’s

What did you do with G&L?

Lived at Lynn and Bolsa Chica.

Seagate is a customer, just no need to hang out in either the magnetic media or head manufacturing areas these days.
I bailed on the industry side of tech, and since pandemic semi retired.
Xydex was in OC (Seagate bought them and fired EVERYONE)
Xyratex sold out to Seagate and within 2 years I once again was “deemed redundant”

Don’t exact “love” Seagate.

What did you do with G&L?
Was the “floater” worker.
Assigned duty was necks, frets dressing, assembly of tuners and mating to completed bodies. My station was 3 desks away from Leo’s lab.

That said I volunteered whenever someone was out, and took weekend overtime.
Lumber cut, glue up, neck and body rough shape. Router duty. Fret install. Neck radius gang saw. Final sanding.

Drove Leo home a few days out of the month for over a year.

Got to get close to George, Lloyd, Dale etc.

There are a multitude of great vids that explain it for bass. But since I’m not playing out, I don’t use it. I know it well enough to have a passing knowledge so that when I do need it, I’ll be prepared. I don’t (currently) have to worry about singers who need to change the key. It’s not all that hard to do. I expect Dave can figure it out well enough since he is a former keyboard player.

Wow!

Biding my time for a 1964 Gibbie.
Yeah. They’re not getting any cheaper. I’m not robbing the 401k to get one. Especially in these uncertain times. If I don’t buy another Gibson, that’s ok. I have what I have. And they are all more than I expected to be able to get before I retire and things get really tight.

No clips to share but I was using this cab:

400w @ 8 ohms, 2x12. It has and adjustable tweeter. It was really loud and clean if you wanted it to be.

Now I am using it with a Mesa Subway 1x15 cab. Still very loud if need be. Does not move quite as much air (1x15 vs. 2x12) but for the small club gigs I do its way more than enough.

I would look for a modern, 2x12 cab as that may help with more definition vs. older 15's. If the head (whichever one you choose) has enough power to keep up, the cabinet will be more of a factor than the type of head for clarity.

I like loud and clean.
I've scored a Mesa TT-800 head, using it presently with a Schroeder 1210, a 20+ year old model. I will be looking for something taller, less low-mids-heavy though.
The Mesa TT head is going to be just fine I think- two channels and very flexible for sounds, there are a lot of tools in there, it'll take some time to get that wired. My goal is to stop being interested in gear and to be happy with the sounds I have at my disposal. I feel like I'm on that path and progressing... And yes, I definitely believe in speakers being the most important part of a signal chain.
Glad I’ll never have to don one of these “bunny suits” again

I did a gig with a Barney suit once. Not playing, but as a mascot for the opening of a store. It was hilarious and awful at the same time.

Oil Derek on the corner and bird sanctuary across the street.
Yep. When HB was “cheap.” Remember the Jack in the Box by the pier? Midnight onion rings after going to the Golden Bear. I saw so many shows there at that iconic place. And the ski and surfing movies at the the theater. God. I miss those innocent days. A magical time.

Sure: why not it’s just between us right?

I’m amused by where they reckon John was born.
