Thunderbird Club

One thing about my Jazz is that the trussrod is as tight is will go and if I happen to get too much neck relief in the future, I’ll most likely need to purchase another-

American Standard necks are difficult to find and the new Jazz basses have five mounting screws so my only options seem to be either get a Fender Mexican neck or go with someone like Warmoth.

So I wonder what would you do or recommend in the event I would need a new neck?
Probably buy a new one because…

Of course you could try the washer trick but that’s no fun. Any excuse for a new bass.

Warmoth or Musikraft.

You could pop a brass washer under the nut, the rod is not necessarily maxed out, you just ran out of threads.
I suggest you look at Freestone Guitars on eBay, less than Warmoth and a great selection of woods.

Not licensed, so you may have to sand off a nub on the ball at the headstock.
Undrilled, but you can order that, dual action rods, and will take custom orders.
Unfinished, but will do nitro or oil as an added service.
I like TruOil the result is fantastic and easy to do with a little patience.

What I do is find a neck that is up for auction,
Drop in my max bid, and often enough I win for 150 all in, I’ve gotten 3 that way.
One got oil finish, the others I shot with Mohawk aerosol nitro, easy peasy.

Warmoth necks are great, but they come standard with steel bars. The makes them super stable, but heavy.
They will do carbon fiber rods for an upcharge.

Is a spacer an option? That would allow you to keep the original neck, which is important.

Thought you had a Thunderbird.... ;)

If it plays and feels like my '06 it will be a joy to play. La Bella Black Nylon (tapes) are really a nice match. Looks great with the black hardware as a bonus.
I had a RH Epi IV back when I joined the group, but sold it.

And yeah, I've got most of a Thunderbirdish object with an expected time of completion sometime next year, at the rate I'm progressing.

But I've never held or played a real LH Gibson 'Bird.

Quite a leap of faith ordering this one on the strength of a handful of photos and a description.

Will be by far my largest single investment in an instrument. Factor of 2+.

But it felt right. Less than two hours from first seeing the listing, to dropping the hammer.

Music's supposed to be about the feels, yes?

Style points, many.
Wisdom points, unknown.

And feelings of regret from letting that last one slip away, purged. At least for now till arrival and inspection.

Now... we wait.

Yes- I could keep it - there is another option where I might get my luthier friend to clamp heat press it for me. But as a 50 plus year repair veteran he’s skeptical-

But it’s not a hard thing to do and about a third of them take without a relapse-

I did find an open box Fender Performer Classic Jazz Neck that would fit for 700.00. Hate those lollipop tuners though- why would they do that?
