Thunderbird Club

They are great basses. BTW - you're the first club member to be sporting a new VP with a light relic job on it. Play it proud, don't let the little dings in life get you down. And welcome to the club .

That VP would make a really cool avatar (hint hint). :smug:
Thanks much for the feedback. I know what I'm looking for and I knew when I picked it up played it that it was the one. I've always been against ordering instruments sight unseen. I will get the ding drop filled and repaired but yeah, I'm not sweating it at all. I'll be so happy to play this thing live!

Glad to be in the tbird club thanks!

That’s very kind of you to say, thanks!

I can get the voice part loud by cranking the ribbon mic and turning the amp way down, but then the music part tends to suffer a bit. Too much room noise. Trying to find the balance...one of these days!

I love my Mesa M9 a lot and they’re very special amps. I don’t think the video showed the Sunn at its best, but it was close. The Sunn is more vintage sounding like a nice ACC amp and the M9 is more modern...tends to mic up really well too
I want to start slowly getting more cool, iconic amps. Should sell off couple first

Keep the Traynor, ((O)))), Mesas and Reiner pre. Sorted.

The 64 T’Bird II and pickup comparison talk started me thinking...

Do you have - in your mind - an idea of how the 63 ThunderBucker would compare to your Lollars ? Less well than the 66? Or closer than the 66?
I haven't tried any of them yet but I think I'm favoring the thunderbuckers. The reviews are great and the guy playing the who songs with that JAEbird have me sold on them . The lull pickups were tempting but the pricetag is just too much for me.

I heard he was showing signs of improvement. The brain damage wasn't nearly as bad as first thought but I doubt he'll be playing a bass again. I think the new club member initiation revisions we put in place will keep the permanent damage to a minimum. Do you recall if @kat888 was supposed to dial back the voltage on the welder, or were we supposed to stop putting their feet in a tub of water, I'm confused. o_O

You always forget the liquid nitrogen!

What's up with your band, if I may?

Keyboard player has moved away to another island, so it was his final gig with the band.

Also I'm selling my apartment and moving to a house quite a bit outside Copenhagen on May 1st.
The house has lot's of space for a studio/rehearsal space for the band, but will need some renovation for this - So we (the band) are going on an extended hiatus until the studio is up and running.

Vince is right. It's really all about economics. You really should do the responsible thing, and buy this bass! You've already expressed your love for Thunderbirds, and more recently, the Vintage Pro specifically. You've also confessed that you have others that "barely get used". You have the very rare opportunity before you, to kill three birds with one stone. Get a white VP... sell off a lesser used bass that you don't feel such desire and passion for... and put some money in your pocket when all is said and done! I fail to see a downside! @Dr_Feelgoood212 ... any downsides?;)

Exactly! Sell an Alembic and get 10 VP's instead - Much better value for money! :D:D:D

John Entwistle's tone on Quadrophenia. I got my first Thunderbird in Jan. of 2016, after playing the same 7ender Jazz bass for 22+ years. I had been asked to join a band again and the J bass was in a sad state. I decided that if I was going to get something in addition, it had to be totally different to justify having it. (cool story removed)

When I saw Skynyrd they were opening for the Who on the Quadrophenia tour. Entwhistle playing a bird sure didn't hurt; it's just that I was already sold. 8^)

The Lollars sit right between the ‘63 and ‘66. I have to say, Lollars are my favorite of the 3 but not by a mile. It’s present and clear like the ‘63, but chunkier and thicker, like the ‘66. The only thing I would’ve done differently had I known, would be to just get a Lollar for the neck position only and just put a cover/dummy pickup in the bridge for looks. The neck pickup is perfect and doesn’t lack anything.

Lulls are spendy for sure!

Ya' know, with all the vintage Sunn & Acoustic, heads still floating around out there pulling yeoman duty. That has to testify for something!
Here we are 40+yrs on and they are still chuggin' along and kickin' it.
Nowadays, it seems like a fluke if you can squeeze a few years out of the newer silicon stuff before it craps out.

Hell, one of my 2000s even still has the original Tung-Sol tubes in it. Those things just keep going. Cockroaches and the Energizer Bunny will be rocking out with that old equipment when we are once again but loam.

re!

Thanks Duke, I kinda suspected that.

Sounds like picking 2 from 3 winning options. Can’t lose.

Be careful with that tower of power.

That is where @kat888 has gone wrong - with a house, there is far more room for basses and bowling shoes. (Hats need little room as they are nestable).
