But what I really feel I need is a bass mentor. Someone that can help me figure it out.

I did lessons for about a year but in the end I didn’t feel like I was being taught in a manner that worked for me.

I dated this gal in Cali, and the only thing of worth she ever said was, "Do your Dreams, otherwise, they turn into nightmares". I may not be one of the better players out there, but I know I'm not half bad.

For me, it's all about satisfying that thing that we each have inside us that makes us do this. If THAT li'l guy's happy with what I'm doing (persnickety bastard that he is)… then I know I'm on the right track & I'll keep doin' what I'm doin', and will fight to defend it. That li'l guy does a pretty good job of letting me know when I'm ready, and when I'm not... when I should & when I shouldn't. He tends to take his music pretty seriously, so I've learned to trust him to keep me from overstepping my bounds. I don't really look at myself in terms of good or bad… I just wanna satisfy "that guy". When that guy's smilin' the people all around him are smilin' too

Well… until you find that someone… jam along with your favorite records until your fingers bleed. That's how everybody starts! Plus ya got yer own "house band" you can jam with whenever ya want! Most folks ain't got such luxuries

6 - Falco had two hits and that was one... So not a one hit wonder. Terrible? No, probably not.


So, were these the worst songs? No, they are iconic songs that represented the 80s (for good or ill). The really terrible songs have been forgotten.

How can worst not include Gary Numan?

I was doing the prechorus part.

I knew what song you were playing by the third or forth note! You played it just fine.
When folks come over to the house and get curious about wanting me to play some songs for them I always tell them I'll pick the first song and they get to pick the next two. Just for shirts and giggles I pull out my bass ukulele and throw on an Offspring CD set to Pretty Fly for a White Guy. If I can nail that song with a Uke you can do it with your birds. I'm a mediocre bass player at best, but I have fun and that's what matters. My son is an excellent guitarist and also plays bass and keys but I've never had the luck to play with him, I hope to some day. Count your blessings while you can.

Gotta disagree with you about Gary Numan. He was an innovator in the synth/electronic genre. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but certainly not some shallow hack. Plus, I'm personally close to the family of the man that invented the synth that "Cars" was recorded with. Through them, I learned a lot about the man and his music.
He's just one of those guys that's more than his biggest hit.

I missed an opportunity to play at an open mic with all three of my kids because I couldn’t learn a song well enough to pull it off. I’d have choked and ruined it so I chose to sit out. If you’re good enough to play with him, make it happen. None of us are promised tomorrow so just do it.

Here's my beef with that list: they picked songs that seem cheesy now but were HUGE hits at the time. That means a whole lot of people loved those songs for quite a while.

I'm Too Sexy by Right Said Fred should be there. One song I'm sure would have been on that list of it had It been released 4 years earlier is that stupid Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm piece of crap by Crash Test Dummies. Instead it makes the 90's list with ease.

I've always just filled the holes with wood filler, let it dry, sink in the replacement screws. Never a problem.
