I don't use it much. It's transparent enough, and it works, but when the upright starts feeding back, comp is the last thing you want. I have tried comp pedals and never got along with them so well. On guitar, sure, but on bass? Not at all. I use the variamp a whole lot. It is far more versatile than you would expect it to be, probably because there's usually just one awkward frequency, and that makes it easy to find and cure the problem, whether it's too much or too little of that frequency. I don't use the growl all that much, but it's fun to play with. It isn't over the top like the original's fuzz circuit, unless you really want it to be. The big difference between the original and the Grexa version is that the power section now has an on-off switch. The original requires a staged on and off procedure because the power section runs wide open all the time. There's only a preamp volume knob. If you plug in the powered cabinet before connecting everything else and turning on everything else, you get some really awful noise, and probably some speaker cone damage if you do it enough. That's 1968 technology for you. I kinda wish I had multiple powered cabinets, since you can run four cabinets off each preamp head. But, what would I do with four of them, and where would they go? I don't know, but that doesn't stop the dreaming.
