Thunderbird Club

Side question if any one has any info that'd be awesome. If not it's all good too.

I've got a chance to either pick up a peavey TKO 65, mid 80's model. Or The Tko 115s sheffield 90's model. I'm familiar & have played the 115 s countless times with my band & it's nice & defined even for a 15" speaker. Also read its the series that replaced the 65 afterwards.

I guess i might be answering my own question of which i should get...Familiar territory rather than something just for the sake of it.

I think the correct answer is always: Both!

I will check with him, hopefully he does. Wilkins I believe uses poly as well, at least based on turn around. I did check Bad Mojo, very good stuff, but unfortunately, like MJT, don't offer a factory fresh finish, their closest being Clean Unaged, which is meant to look like an unplayed 50 year old instrument.
"It will be about as clean as a vintage instrument can be. Our finishes are meant to look like they have been around for 50 plus years. We do not do factory clean finishes. "
But that might be what I go with, it seems nitro finishers are real into some sort of aging.
Looking at those websites got me thinking again about getting the '91 refinished. I have emails off to both to see which makes more sense. I don't need factory perfect, and probably don't want factory perfect anyway. Their unused/closet finishes are fine for me. I'm leaning toward burgandy mist, which is a pink Cadillac color. That would look pretty good on a 'Bird. Cost will make a difference.

I'm waiting to see what RS's estimate is, Badmojo's price is pretty alright, and continuing to look their Clean Unaged does look pretty good, at least good enough for me. If you're getting Burgundy Mist, I'd recommend Heather Mist Poly, Gibson's equivalent color, which is typically a little more pale than Burgundy Mist. I was actually contemplating it as well if the color I want turns out too hard to match.

Somewhere there is a colour list showing the Thunderbird colours and what their names were across the different GM divisions. Not sure if it was in this thread or on that Mr Fly ? website

Btw: Burgundy Mist is the same colour as Heather Mist, just Fender colours were slightly darker versions. Same with Pelham vs Lake Placid etc. (if the chart I found is correct)

It will cost almost as much as your 'Bird is worth to get someone qualified to paint it. You can half ass it as well as anyone, maybe better.

I was just looking at that info this morning...
Gibson Custom Colors in the 1960s
Very informative.

+1. FWIW, I contacted a couple of local, luthiers a while back about re-finishing a 2006 T-Bird. @Dadagoboi is spot on. I paid $850 for the T-Bird and was quoted $800 from one and $900 from another. I was looking at either Pelham Blue or Inverness Green.

As I was procrastinating on dropping $800 bucks for vanities sake, I found my current T-Bird (2014, Heritage Cherry) popped up at a Guitar Center for $899. I pulled the trigger knowing I could return it if I did not care for it. Turns out I loved the neck, felt a good bit slimmer than the 2006. I swapped all the hardware over and sold the 2006 for $850.

If I had the cash I would not hesitate to have one re-done. I have never cared for the modern, sunburst, T-bird finish.
