Thunderbird Club

The 544 cowl vent was well used. Which ‘53 Studi? My Dad had a ‘54 Flight Hawk. Amazing and beautiful car. Until he ran it into a light pole in a bar parking lot. Yeah. Mom was pissed. We still talk about it today. That was such a beautiful car.

I know a Studebaker aficionado who has a couple Hawks - super cool design. Very euro.

Were you required to swap instruments part way through each set?

Actually the 1st band I ever saw do that was 'Oregon' (w/Ralph Towner) in the mid 70's - but more recently Tortoise ... killer musicians.

my '66 122s had um' (and an aftermarket A/C that I had removed when I bought it in '76 (a doctors car) The only car I wish I still had. (in mint condition!)

66 - 67 122s and 544s were the last of the vintage Volvos and the best. The 140s that followed weren’t bad cars, but too heavy. The subsequent 240s were the same, but a touch more refined. I’ve owned a lot of Volvos starting with a ‘59 544. My brother was a designer for them for 30 years. Best one I owned was an ‘87 740 Turbo wagon. Amazingly fast. I have a Subie now. Volvo priced themself out of my bracket...

That's so cool that your brother was a designer for Volvo! My 122s Estate Wagon was my favorite car I've owned. Just loved that car!

The Hawks and the Avanties are among the most beautiful cars ever built. A kindler, gentler time when aesthetics mattered in the car industry. Unfortunately, Stubebaker didn’t make it past ‘63. A big loss.

I’m a huge fan. Here is designer Ray Loewy’s wiki page. Guy was truly an artist.

Preaching to the choir... I looked forward to seeing the fall Studebakers premiered on "The Mr Ed Show" (sponsored by Studebaker!)

Looking at budget used amps nearby. Ampeg BA115HP ($250), Fender Rumble 115 ($200), Peavey TKO 80 ($150).
There’s also an Ampeg B1RE ($120), but I’d need to pick a cab.

Any standouts, or keep looking? Mostly for practice for now, but occasionally would be used for back yard jam sessions.
I have a BA115 - built like a tank, plenty loud for small to medium gigs, jam sessions and practice. Typical Ampeg voicing. $200 for a used one in mint condition would be a fair price.

Bro did the original S80, XC90 an XC60 body designs, as well a for Europe only car. Moved them out of the box. Ford buying Volvo was the worst thing that could have happened to them. Took tons of cash out of it and then cast it off. They’re a Chinese owned company today. They are still huge in Europe and Asia. But US consumers see better value elsewhere. Bro retired last year. Long time dealer in my area severed relationship with it on 06/30. I switched to Subie in ‘13.

So cool. I would love to talk shop with a pro-designer (your brother) of another product -the roots would overlap!

When I saw BOC the first time at the Fox Theater in Atlanta (dec 73), all 5 band members were on guitar or bass for part of one song, and drums or keys for another. Incredible musicians.

I’m thinking about building a Fenderbird. I have a Jazz neck and a Goth body. I might drop some Thunderbuckers in it too.

The Goth bodies are a good choice because they are inexpensive and solid mahogany. (the raised center section is grafted on) They are a bit on the heavy side though...

I'd be very interested in hearing what strings you use, what the clearance is between your neck pup and the strings, and if you have a small magnet you can use for a test - what the orientation of each pup is (are the neck poles on the neck pup the same polarity as the neck poles on the bridge pup.
Those three things would tell me a ton!
I'll even buy you a pitcher of beer next time I see you!

@MCF this applies to you too - free beer!!!
I will have to remember to look. It could be a while. I tend to have a higher action than you like. The 2015 hates compression!
