Lord help me, but I’m going to attempt a somewhat serious question. I got this new (to me) Fano bass with Dennis Fano designed T-Bird style pickups. The bass is awesome, btw. Plays great and all. I normally set my neck pickup higher than the bridge pickup, but on the Fano it’s the other way around. Neck pickup is quite low and doesn’t change by just loosening the screws. I’m going to try raising it up at some point, but for now I will say it’s super growly in a pretty neat way. Probably too growly for the gig I’m on tonight, but that’s what I brought. Anyone here set their bridge pickup higher than the neck pickup? Just curious how y’all prefer your setup. I don’t think there’s a ‘best’ way, just as I don’t think there’s a ‘best’ string, amp or whatever. Just curious what others like and why

I saw an interview with Alex (on the yoot oob IIRC) and he was asked about what they get on their (in ear) monitors. Alex said that he gets everything. Geddy gets a little guitar but lots of bass drum, snare drum, and high hat. When asked what Neil gets he didn't know. He said that Neil might not get anything because he just knows all the songs cold and doesn't need any cues.

I don't think there is a band who has influenced me more than "Rush" perhaps because of the timing. I had an older brother (God rest his Soul) who raised me with the essential fundamentals: Sabbath, Deep Purple, ELP, Grand Funk, Yes etc & as a kid I ALWAYS dreamt of being a Drummer. He also lead me to my first concerts, in the same month I saw Sabbath & The Stones, Think it was during the "Goats Head Soup Tour" with the stage being an unfolding star, don't know which Sabbath tour it was, just remember that "Slade" backed them up. By the time '74 hit I was starting High School, got my first guitar & saw my first concert solo which was Rush @ the Auditorium Theater in Chicago which I believe was the "2112" tour.

They had this unknown band called "Cheap Trick" backing them up, I was like "look it's Satch from Bowery Boys/Dead End Kids playing guitar lol" Those poor guys got BRUTALIZED, I never saw Soo much pyrotechnics on stage in the form of M80"s & other Debris hitting it, was was like a war zone. I don't think they lasted 15:minutes & had to make a hasty departure with "Satch" knocking over one his Sound City amps in a show of frustration/defiance like that would bother us or something lol but that's the way it was in the 70's there was NO ROOM for BS Bands/Music, our "internet" was word of mouth & sharing albums, a true "underground" we even rejected FM radio except for a few college stations because no one was broadcasting "our hero's" with Rush being at the top of the that list!!

It took at least 45 minutes to clean up that stage before they could start setting it up lol
If memory serves they started with "Anthem" & worked their way to 2112 which they played in it's entirety, it was "Pure Magic" I was hooked & under their spell, even though I was into guitar at the time, I spent at least 80% of that & following shows being mesmerized by this incredible brilliance AKA "Neil Peart"

From that show up to "Moving Pictures" I saw them at least 20 times, by far more than ANY other band, with most of those shows being at the infamous "Aragon Brawl Room" in Chicago!!
The most special was the 77/78 "A Farewell To Kings" tour in which they were supposed to play @ "The Chicago Amphitheatre" being they were pretty big by then BUT they decided to cancel that venue & appease "The Ghosts Of The Aragon" one more time & ended up playing 5 shows there (Monday Through Friday) to wheras yours truly did 4 out 5 glorious nights
(took a break on Wednesday lol)

After then they were on their way to selling out arenas & being THE most consistent/successful band in Rock history.
So instead of calling this a "sad day" I choose to celebrate the man's life and being so grateful that I was "raised" by the best!!
Rush taught me to always pursue what I believed In, follow my dreams and above all, NEVER comprise my art no matter what!!

The best example of this was/is "2112" since "Fly By Night" was dubbed the "Down The Tubes" tour, they were pressured by their Label to produce more "Radio Friendly" material at the risk of being dropped if they didn't comply, of course we know the rest!! going "against grain" & sticking to their beliefs proved to be the correct course of action!!

Over the years, people that I have talked to that were around "bask in the day" would always complain that "they didn't sound like they used to" & "too much production, synthesizer" etc & I was like, do think Neil would be in this band if they didn't progress?? Geddy IMHO is the best example of that, back in the day he was basically "the singer that played bass" kinda like "Phil Lynott" decent players & all but by no means the formidable entity that he progressed to!! By the Time "A Farewell To Kings" came out, he was a force to be reckoned with & had taken a Quantum Leap since the release of their debut, I believe this was all due to Neil's influence, he or Rush in general would have never hit those "Lofty Plateus" if it weren't for "The Professor"

Even though I am SHOCKED that he has succumbed to a most incideous illness , being most didn't even know he was sick, I wish to express gratitude instead of sadness and wish the "Universal Being" a fond " Bon Voyage"

On all of my two pickup basses the bridge pickup is always higher than the neck, it adds some bite and treble to the note - I like it!

Bridge pickups just do not get full amplitude so need to be closer if you like them balanced

My '89, bridge pickup is raised quite a bit - I am a heathen in that I like them, and note the center screw on that glorious piece of Gibson engineering, it's lower that the outboard ones, I'm going to burn in hell.

Cranked up pretty good on this '76 too.

Cool axe - I do set the bridge pu higher - the string moves less there so I get it pretty close. The neck pu as close as I can with the last fret fretted, and possibly back off the E string side so it doesn't wolf.
