Thunderbird Club

Way way back in time during the late 70's I had a mid 70's Super Beetle, it had an Autostick, what a dog but still fun. A few years later I bought a 1968 Bug, caught the engine on fire on the way to work one morning, only cost $600 to replace it. In 1981 I bought a brand new Rabbit Sport (pre GTI years) loved that car, but it had vinyl seats and no air conditioning - bad combination for hot humid Midwest summers. In the mid 90's I bought an Audi A4 Quattro, fantastic in the snow! In 2005 I bought a Porsche Cayenne S - fantastic on dry pavement, not on snow! Since then I've added two more Porsche products, a Cayman and a 911. So seven VW and related products for me, I've enjoyed every one of them for different reasons.

PS - I also had a Subaru Imprezza coupe somewhere in that mix. I wish I had taken a picture of it with my basses!

A long time ago, in high school, I had one of these:

I'm envious of the 911, wonderful cars they are. I always lusted after one as a teenager but never got the chance to drive one until after I left the navy. My then boss wanted to buy some machinery at an auction in hull some 250 mile away but his car was a wreck so he borrowed his mates 911. He couldn't get it out of the yard through stalling it so I ended up driving it. When we got to the address on the paperwork he had it turned out to be a residential and the actual auction was some 50 miles further south and starting on less than an hour. Needless to say the subsequent drive through the lanes of Lincolnshire was probably the most memorable of my life.
A year or so after that I came into some serious cash from a salvage job and was able to buy my house with enough left over to buy a new 911, so off I went to buy my dream car but somehow ended up in a Lotus dealer and was completely seduced by an Esprit, it was like a spaceship in comparison to the Porsche and handled like a dream. In hindsight it was the right thing to do, it was a much more forgiving car than the 911, I think I'd have killed myself had I bought one. I kept the lotus for 20 years, sad day when it went, trailered away (not for the first time:roflmao:)

Always loved the look of the lotus, especially when they went to the V8 engine and rear wing. Just looked like a very proper version of a Lamborghini with that wedge shape and low flat windscreen. Got a chance to drive one and was really taken by the leather interior as well as its road manners. Was prepared to buy one, but with a new baby on the way the wife and I decided an SUV would be the way to go, hence the Cayenne. No major regrets, but I still lust after the Lotus.

Let me rephrase that for the married men on this thread...

Subarus and TBirds just go together nicely, like chocolate and ...............what was that other thing called?
The other thing is a happy wife. That's what it's called. But, it won't necessarily involve what you want all the time.
I think i've figured out a perfect line of endorsement if ever i was offered:

- Amp wise: Peavey (if they could replicate/re-issue my century bass head) & Orange cabs
- Cables: D'addario Planet waves
- Picks: Dunlop .88 green tortex (standard & triangle)
- Strings: D'addario
- Basses: Most likely ESP (if i go for know brands) because they could pretty much give me what i want in terms of tone. But i'd just continue using my own line of basses that i've built :p

No need to be endorsed by one sole pedal maker because although i'm an MXR guy, on my board i'll have some soundblox pedals as well.

What would yours be?
Amp: Acoustic Control (Acoustic USA was a valiant attempt to resurrect Acoustic Control. To heck with the Guitar Center house brand.)
Cables: Whatever's lying around and works
Wireless: Shure digital
Picks: Don't usually use 'em
Strings: DR most of the time but not always
Bass guitars: Gibson, even though I think Henry J one of the worst things that ever happened to Gibson.
Pedals: Aguilar Tone Hammer and fDeck HPF.
Motorcycles: Triumph
Van: old Chevy full sized
Leathers: Well scuffed and crashed Vanson
Helmet: a new one because, well, never mind why.

Car? I have one of those. It's stationary. I blew the motor a while ago and haven't bolted down the new one yet. Endorsement? Um...

Question for you all: I've got the new T Bird coming hopefully for the weekend, what strings would you recommend I put on it? I've always used RS66s but as I have those on the Epi Bird I'd like something different. My knowledge of strings is at best limited to the Rotos which is what I've always used.

I use GHS Progressives on mine -

My grandmother had a '69 Thunderbird. You'd be doing 90 on the highway before you could say "Whoa, Nellie!!"

Needless to say that one got traded in for a smaller car... what a monster that was. Like flying a large airplane.
I had a 1972 Ford station wagon with the fake wood on the side. It was a complete barge. The best car I ever had was a 1954 Triumph TR-2. The top blew off at any speed over about 30 mph, and the side curtains didn't so much. So I drove it in proper roadster fashion no matter what the weather was. I got some odd looks driving it that way in blizzards and hail storms, but that wasn't my problem. It was about as reliable as your stoner brother in law when he's on a bender, but that was part of the charm. It was so elemental that reliability was optional. The only vehicle more elemental than that car is a motorcycle, which is probably why I commute on a bike and go wherever else I can on the bike. It doesn't haul amps and instruments, so I can't go everywhere on it, but I have thought about a sidecar rig with a storage box instead of the usual car.

I'm a big fan of TI Powerbass when I want to spend the money on strings that'll last a looooong time, but on an "unproven" bass (or when I'm short on cash,) I like D'Addario Stainless.

EB Cobalt flats. I tried them on my Jaguar and they roar.

My bass endorsement would be with Jackson, since their only bass endorser I'm aware of is David Ellefson. My sig model would be a TBird with a proper 80s blood spatter paint job. Amps and cabs would likely be GK, but I'd also go Hartke, Ampeg or Mess because I'm a whore like that. Also would endorse Dunlop to get their strings, MXR pedals, cables and anything else I could think of including T shirts. I'm already using their strings and their m85 bass distortion anyway.

Queen says.......

DR Stainless Rounds .45.105 + Tortex .73 pick = One big angry piano

They keep their zing way better than Roto Sound.

But, reading:

I think I might have to give that a try.

I have had good luck with both DR Lo Riders and Hi Beams, but my go to strings for my T-bird are Dean Markley Blue Steels. Lots of good string choices, though, and it'll come down to personal preference.
