Thunderbird Club

I love it!
Try it with the bridge pickup rolled off and a pick - Much goodness there!
That is how I started, I was a bit skeptical about it, since the huge humbucker in my EB-3 is a bittersweet pickup for a down picking style it doesnt fit the sound of the band. This one in the other hand... the neck alone, or the bridge or any other combination of mix and tone, it doesnt matter, it sounds great. But the neck and tone on full is a dream!

There are a lot of great tones to be had! I am partial to the neck pickup rolled back a bit and playing fingerstyle. I get a nice growl out of it.

back in the saddle with the corporate band…:)

A certain Thunderbird player with a thing for red Thunderbirds has been seen lurking in the Mesa Subway Club thread. Wonder what she's up to.

:)Fingers crossed she finds a once in a lifetime deal and decides to sell me her Red Eppi to fund the purchase.
I know, unicorns and flying pigs, but heck, a guy can wish can’t he!:D

So, I got my Epiphone Thunderbird Vintage Pro this monday.
I am an old school P bass lover (counting a couple) and I just loved the Bird style but never got along with the small tuners and the plastic pickups. In February I got an Epi EB3, and found a dirty muddy sound to be a cool feature and a hell of a bass to have in my arsenal. Then I found this bad boy and it is a beast.
I can say for sure that if the guys at Gibson decided to stick the Gibson logo in that beast and sold it it for 2k it would still be a great value, I got it for less than 600€ and I cannot believe the monster I have in my hand. I have played and own a couple MIA P bass, this feels like a P on steroids. In all this years I have never played with such joy. I look like a kid when I pick it up.
Plus, today I took it to a jam with my old friends, they were expecting some P bass (as usual) and their faces where pure gold looking at my beast and they lost their mind to the sound, funny how we never thought about getting a bird..

Well this is a game changer, I will probably get another one, since we are about to start digging again and this has everything to be my number 1 bass and a new one will be a nice backup.
I just cannot understand how this bass is considered a "not for everyone" type of bass, this thing punches and can get very jazzy if needed.

By far a game changer, it screams for louder and louder. Makes the valves explode
So glad for you Carlos! They are fantastic basses. After adding a modern Gibson Thunderbird I was really confused as to why in the work they didn't start using the VP ProBucker pickups. They are Thunderbird PUs. The modern version is something of a disappointment having owned and heard a '64 for decades. The VP is very, very close. Could get closer to the original, but you would be talking serious money. For that reason, VPs are a steal. If Gibson wanted to sell out of Thunderbirds all they need to is use the ProBuckers and the basses would be back ordered in no time. I love playing my '06 and it plays like my '64. But the VPs sound like the '64.

Some strings will obviously sound better than others, so enjoy the journey. My fave is GHS Boomers. Perfect for what I want--big massive tone with punch. Welcome home!

Those sidewinder pickups, right at the neck, sound incredible. Have that on my EB3 and Midtown.

I had a very strange morning. I went kayaking about 0830 as I usually do. But I was cut short as I picked up a hitchhiker.

On the Hamilton side of the bay (where it is all seawalls) I saw something furry swimming. Thinking it was a beaver (ahem) even though it seemed too light, I went to take a look. It turned out to be a little chihuahua; cold, tired, and swimming for its life.

Once in the kayak, he just wanted to cuddle (probably because he was cold and wet, because once I have been paddling for 15-20 minutes, I am a little malodiferous). Well, I wasn't going to finish my planned route - I just paddled back to where I started.

I got him home and borrowed a cup of kibble from a neighbour. He ate a huge amount for a dog that weighs 2-3 lbs then curled up on the floor to sleep a little. After many calls to find out what to do with a lost dog. I took him to the humane society. He isn't chipped (and no collar when I got him out of the lake). They will make some efforts to locate the owner. I said that if they fail to locate an owner, I would take him. If that happens, his name will be Splash.
An update.

I called the humane society. Splash did indeed have a family looking for him.

They picked him up on Monday. I am sure that Splash was excited to see his family again and I hope the family was relived to get him back.

But I confess to being a little disappointed. He is such a sweet little guy that I would have loved to have him join my family.

Sorry for you, but you did a great thing. Curious how he wound up where you found him.

Hey guys, I came back to the club - bought my short-scale Tbird back from the guy I had sold it to on Reverb! Lucked out on that and picked it up in person now that I live in the southwest, just a few hours away from where I had shipped it to - It's a bit chewed up from its original ownership with the punk band SNFU, but that's just raw mojo on this thing. I do plan to get a new truss nut for it (a bit rounded over) and maybe a professional neck tweaking as it's hard to get the relief just right myself, but it plays pretty dang good still, and sounds PHENOMENAL. I don't know that I've ever heard a VVT setup make such clear changes with such small knob tweaks (and all are musical, to boot).

Here she is as the centerpiece of my all-shorty gang.
