Thunderbird Club

I just can't get into the olive drab guitars and basses, but that's fine. Lots of people don't get into what I'm into. Like tort. I've never understood the revulsion. And that's OK, too.

I guess the OD birds are perfect for when you're with your unit on patrol behind enemy lines but need to stop for an electric jam every once in a while to break the monotony.

Full gold hardware might be a BIIIIIIIIITTTT over the top :roflmao:
Chicken!

I had a white Pbass that I put all gold hardware on in the early 80s. It looked good. That bass succumbed to undocumented borrowing about 10 years ago.

When I first got the white VP, the first thing a drummer said to me is that it would look good with gold hardware. At first I thought he was nuts. The more I thought about it, the more I think you could actually work. But like with anything, you have to like that kind of thing. But I have no plans whatsoever to do it.

Confirmed on the tort..This one is a case queen. You can see the plastic still covering the pick guard.
I picked it up from my local Craig's list. It sat on there for three weeks and the guy got no bites. It was his sons Bass and he couldn't bond with it...Took it home for $385 with the case in unplayed mint condition.

I play it from time to time..but it takes a big set of balls!

Sorry. :)

I'm not sure what I'm looking at - is this a home version of those big birthday tents filled with balls?

Only hesitation I truly would have would be to replace those stock pickups. They sound AWESOME and would be a shame to take out.

Out of curiosity, if you were to go down this round to replace all hardware to gold, what would you choose for pickups?

I spent some time last night working on Highway Star (Deep Purple) and Ain't No Grave (Molly Skaggs). Highway Star is great for my picking stamina but I've also found I tend to dig in with my fretting hand while playing it, so working on that, too. I pulled up an isolated bass track and discovered that all along I've been fooled about what he's playing because there is SO MUCH going on in that song with all the instruments. I'm working on getting the gist of what he does, but keeping some of what I've always thought was in there. And of course, it works just great with a THUNDERBIRD! With Ain't No Grave, I'm working out my own part.

What's everyone else working on?

You can replace or plate the covers rather than replace the pickups.

The band room was temporary converted into a play area at Christmas time for my two 2 year old grandsons. During the cold days we just toss them in the inflatable pool and wait until they wear out. They sure seem to dig it.
I'll take it all down for the next rehearsal...then probably put it back up by special request. :)

Yes, so I wouldn't do that. They do sound great!

Likely Thunderbuckers. Scott (resident vintage Thunderbird expert), said that the Thunderbuckers were likely first in terms of the real vintage sound, followed by the Epi ProBuckers, if you can believe that--and I do. You could spend some serious money on about three very good current versions, but the ProBuckers 760s sound great. They do lack a little heft in the low-end, but amps have knobs to address that, not to mention some strings have a bigger sound than others (i.e., GHS Round Core Boomers or regular Boomers). Plenty of ways to address there one slight weakness.
