Think about all the things in music that can be fake:
Pitch with Antares Autotune.
Rhythm with a drum machine.
Both with a sequencer.
What do you have as a musician that nobody else has? Your own personal approach to the instrument's sound. What is it that you are feeding off when you play? It's the sound of the instrument beneath your hands.
So tone is very important to you as a player. I didn't used to think this either, but recently I started a process of gradually upgrading my amplifier stable to where I have a good-sounding amp all the time. And I've taken to changing my strings more often than I ordinarily would. Because if I'm going to do this, I need to be enjoying the sound of it or there's no point.
