Top 5 "Bucket List" basses

OK, here is my "One day before I die" bass list ....

1. A Wal MK2 or MK3

2. A Kubicki Ex Factor

3. A Rickenbacker 4005

4. 1960's Jazz bass (Pre CBS)

5. 1950's Precision bass

Your turn .... :bassist:

Nothing that currently exists. So I won't know until I see it...or possibly design it.

1: Gibson RD Artist
2: Gibson Ripper
3: stacked pot Jazz Bass
4: Ampeg Dan Armstrong
5: This last option changes a good bit, but lately I’ve been wanting a Ric of some kind. I don’t know much about the different models, but probably something like a 4003.

1: '50's Precision - I've got this one. A '58. Great neck and tone, but not connecting, may end up selling.
2: '60's Precision - I've got this too. a 1962-1/2, slab board sunburst. My current favorite. Everything is just so right.
3:'60's Jazz - I had a 1965 for many years. Liked the tone, hated the neck. Someday I may get a JB body for the extra '62 P-bass neck that I have.
4: '60's Rick - I've been through more pre-'72 Ricks than I care to count, including 2-'69's and a '67 RM1999. I miss the '69 4001, but have come full circle and would be very happy with just an early '90's V63.
5: Alembic Distillate - I remember these being advertised, but have never even seen one in-person. Would still hove to try one someday.

I keep a photo album on Facebook for my G.A.S. list. Basses, guitars, amps, pedals, keys/synths, recording gear. If I had a million dollars, I could buy all of it. Narrowing it down to five basses, tough call.
1) MTD 535
2) F Bass BN5
2a) Ken Smith 5
3) Pedulla Pentabuzz
4) A nice 7 string. Singlecut.
5) P bass with flats and tort

I've already had them (my two Alembic fives), so after that, there's no mountains to climb. After Alembics, WHAT would you trade UP to ?

But a couple I've always wanted and would like to have before it's all over would be a five-string TUNE Bass Maniac and WoodBass. The BM is the ultimate compact five (in my mind, the real inspiration of the Soundgears, the first ones looked a LOT like BM's), and the WoodBass (with electronics done under contract by Alembic) were ahead-of-their-time fretless semi-hollow body axes.

Ok, I guess my top 5 have changed over the years. Instruments that previously would have been part of this list, and I never thought I would actually own have somehow ended up in my possession over the years (Fodera Emperor Standard 6, 2 FBasses, Greg Curbow Petite 6, EBMM Bongo HS6 in the Honey Roasted PDN finish, & Warwick Thumb BO 6). The following list are those that currently seem beyond my reach. Is there a possibility? Perhaps, but I'll never know until/unless an opportunity presents itself.

Present Top 5
  • Jens Ritter Jupiter 6 in the Black Piano finish

  • Wal Mk3 6, possibly with Mappa Burl if I had a chance to order new. In the meantime, this one with a Purpleheart top on the Wal website looks really nice!

  • Alembic w/Balance K Heart 6

  • Michael Spalt Corona 6
I cannot attach the image here but sort of like Invalid Link Removed, except with 2 humbuckers with exposed poles.
  • Jerzy Drozd Orion 6

Any other time, I would have included Carl Thompson but in January I sent a down payment to initiate a fretless semi-frills 6, so that is exciting. I also recently initiated a new Spector NS 6H2, which will be my first Spector so that is also something to look forward to.

I have others in my wishlist (Sadowsky, Ken Smith, Dingwall, Skjold) which I sort of have a loose timeline within the next 2 years or so, when I would like to act on them. I have to space them out carefully to avoid AWS (Angry-Wife-Syndrome). HaHa

In the '90s i had a Tune BM 4, but wasn't very happy with, it always had kinda cold tone with a pretty lacking of low mids (which i like best on all my other gear, fat punchy low mids).

I would love to know what percentage of you guys have actually played the basses you desire? I'm not trying to be snarky at all. I would love to own or try most of the basses listed, but I've not touched 99.9% of them, and never even seen 99.9% of them in the wild. And yes, I live in Canada.

Good point, and I definitely fall into this category! The only bass on my bucket list is one I haven't tried: the Alembic "brown bass"/Stanley Clarke model. I did try a copy years ago, but I'm not sure how accurate it was to the real thing?!

As far as any other of my "bucket list" basses, I own them. Honestly, Alembic is way above my paygrade ATM! LOL

Righto.

I see lots of people mentioning the Kubicki, for example. I owned one in the 90s and, while it felt great to play, the sound was awful in a mix, live or otherwise, IMO so I got rid of it. I wonder if people drooling over them realize that. Though, I wish I hadn't sold it as cheaply as I did at the time... Would be worth a lot more now!

While I really want a Wal, I've never actually played one and may not even really like it! For the longest time I didn't think I liked Rics because I played a couple I didn't care for. But I found one I totally love and it's the best instrument I've ever owned. So who knows!?
