I LOATHE the effects forum trolls. Like, seriously, why even pop over?
Okay; you are presenting a valid point and there is a high representation of those people on TB. But a bass made in 1994 now counts as vintage, which sort of devalues the term. I've never used pedals and almost never visit the effects forum, and I'm largely indifferent to the opinions of others regarding vintage. Either I like the instrument or I don't. And if I do, I'm willing to go to considerable trouble to make it gig-able.

most of the 'wilder' designs, colours, patterns, etc in our relatively brief history of amplified instruments happened on guitars, commonly leaving the 'milder' visuals to the bass.

many recordings exist of Jaco Pastorius with a variety of gear.

Carol Kaye played on several Stevie Wonder, Four Tops, & Supremes songs.

I disagree. The definition of a vintage instrument is "expensive enough so you can bragg about buying and playing one". This is just before said instrument becomes too expensive to afford it and it becomes a "ridiculously expensive collectible". Your 1994 bass is still just an old bass made in a modern time where quality was vastly inferior to current vintage instrument. Of course, as the "collectible" status progression will make the nowadays vintage unaffordable collectibles, your 1994 melon will become vintage. But by then it will become a super instrument because time will have sorted out the good from the bad. (any resemblance to 70s Fender is not fortuitous, see Interview: Fender Visionary Dan Smith on How to Turn Around a Faltering Guitar Brand | Bacon's Archive).
Ok, just avoid threads where Fenders and Sadowskys are even slightly compared or put in competition to cut 90% of the site’s negativityIf this is a "typical TalkBass" thread, by page three or so we'll be talking about traffic in Bangladesh or why it's so hard to find a good pastrami on rye in Boise.
And a guy who eats lots of sandwiches in Boise or drives a cab in Bangladesh will be pretty pissed off.
Seriously, we have our moments. But, all in all, I think we get a long pretty well and look out for each other. Bickering about dumb stuff is part of our collective charm.

I agree. It's not like an entire position should hinge on grammar. Then again, it's hard to contest ones position when you lack a 4th grade education.

well (if this is not what you mean) music theory should be called "western music philosophy (or language)". "Theory" implies it is scientifically proven as in a scientific theory. While there is a lot of science in music theory, almost every philosophy and even fiction has scientific/historical facts in it. But often what people argue about is the philosophy part, and not the science part. And within western theory, there are endless sub-philosophies as well, which spawn controversial topics.
For instance IMO functional harmony is overrated and overused (especially complex harmony), even though it is a basic tenet of western theory. IMO the best music is written with melody and rhythm as the base, and harmony should be an afterthought if used at all. But people strongly disagree and so much music is written around chord changes. yes, all completely subjective, but it is surprising how emotional people get with such topics. And then the "you are presenting your opinion as fact" and other strawman and empty argument nonsense comes, when people don't like your subjective opinions but have no other way of attacking you.
I have no idea. Maybe someone will post a thread detailing the evolution of carrots on TalkBass. I have a feeling they’d just make carrot jokes the whole time, that the whole thing would lead to more questions than answers.
