Truth be told, I saw the "typical talkbass" twice in 2 days by 2 different people and jumped the gun on pulling the trigger with this thread. I thought it was becoming a thing, and now, thanks to me... I guess it just might. Oh hwell. Ya win some, ya lose some. I'm glad at least a few others seem to have caught it too. I feel a tiny bit less alone :).

Is one of these the thread where physics got into the mix as part of a righty/lefty flip of the bass? I recall that, and the thread finally degenerated into a he said/he said brouhaha over the physics does not make sense/does too. But no one ever explained how/why the physics did or did not make sense.

That, in the big picture, is a minor quibble. But the banning of Nobody is a mortal blow.

When you give an opinion, but present it as fact, and then talk down to people who disagree, those people will react.

I'm on a few other boards (mostly for old cars) and some of the same stuff goes on there too. I think what makes TB different is it is by far the most active board I'm on, like exponentially so. So, where someone might get a handful of responses over a week on another board they get 10 pages in an afternoon here, for better or worse.

TB has been invaluable to me as I've been getting back into playing and trying to replace my ancient gear. Google searches kept leading me back to threads on TB where working musicians have tried whatever piece of equipment I'm looking at and already answered the questions I had with real world experience. So I said, I better get in on this!

Oh, and Happy Birthday, Joe! I never met ya, but I feel like I know ya!

I have only witnessed the belittling sarcastic replies when the OP starts a thread with an intriguing but totally incomprehensible statement or question or neither or both, due to either very poor grammar or intoxication, or perhaps sadly through a failed attempt at translation software turning something like, "how should I eq my SVT in a small room" into something like "how should ed stamp because I did"
And too be fair, a lot of those sarcastic responses are clever entertaining or downright hilarious.

I agree, that's why I only give opinions as opinions and facts as facts. The problem is when people get offended and triggered by an opinion they don't like, then strawman it by saying things like "when you present opinion as fact". But thank you for proving my point, mr. expert.

Well, try starting a thread that goes against the grain, that is comprehensible and full of factual information in addition to one's own opinion stated as such. You will get mobbed pretty quick by the whining experts."b-b-but you were stating your opinion as fact".

You presented your tension "opinion" as fact ("factual information"). You refused to accept that others might not agree. I was neither triggered or offended. But by definition, when you give an opinion, those who don't agree are not wrong, which you refused to accept.

We need links to that thread ya know. Then we'll be able to tell who was right, who was wrong, who was factual, and was being just being typical talkbass.

the factual info was that historically the high tension of stringed instruments was due to a "loudness war" which also led to a higher pitch reference A=440, and that these instruments have string tension to blame for many of their problems. And that these tensions were transferred to electric instruments. My opinion was that in modern times stringed instruments shouldn't have so much tension. This is what triggered you and others. And thus the strawmen and trolling and whining and eventual closing of the thread. This whole "you are stating opinion as fact and refuse to accept anyone else's opinion" is pure hyperbole, because you got triggered and need some revenge for being wronged by an opinon you think is so wrong, being the experts on the subject.

This is proven by the fact that so many that did disagree with me were still able to have intelligent and respectful discussions/debates about it without resorting to trolling and whining. But you can't tell you "experts" anything, you are the experts

What I remember is a lot of people saying your physics didn't make sense, without saying how it didn't. And you saying it did, without elaborating. That was quite an extended back-and-forth which quite thoroughly can erase a lot of what went before in addition to being totally un-illuminating..

And I think my body of work on TalkBass is sufficient for anyone who wants to to be able to assess my sense of humor or ability to read a thread.
