Someone could build a "Kelly Blue Book" of musical instruments. Have people who join provide year, model, options, condition, then state how much they paid and when they bought it, how much they sold it and when, or how much they'd want if they were to sell it.

Would take time. But could work.

Happen to be a data base guy. Oh well. Lots of talk.

It's also that the Jazz is really old design. Many bassists adapt to it rather than the other way around.

The Unities are light, have an awesome neck and cool features.

Still need to dial in the action but I am there. Neck is quasi-flat, small curvature.

It is true that the bridge is inadequate and needs some tinkering with. I may take the Dremel (carefully) to the E string saddle. It is flush, as it is now.

J is an old design.. an RJ is like 20 years old - much of this stuff was ahead of it's time.. espeically a BQuad.

Lurker Note --
Some RJs had a bridge that sits way too high above the body... the fret board of an RJ is only the ebony finger board thickness above the body... great design..

In reality there are few bridges that can sit this low.

Lurker note 2.. My opinion is to buy a quality machinist's "fine rat tail file" and do it by hand.. takes time.. is less risky than power tools..

RJs may be the coolest rock bass I've played yet.. they really don't make sense until you're standing and playing one.

IT may be possible that the pickups are the element you're not digging -- not the preamp.

After owning basses with 9 knobs and a switch (seriously)... it's cool to have 3 or 4 knobs... IF you choose to drill out your bass and add knobs, PLEASE sell me your V/B/T knobs.. they're geeky cool

The bonus you have is some fat sounding Barts would fit right in (and be available used).

IF you're interested, I have an original (old school) Hi-A bridge pickup for you -- I'd donate it to your rawkause.

Well I believe the pickups are fine. Any Peavey pickup is fine. I indeed would like to change the preamp. The sound is mwaah.

What type of bridge would fit? This is a Fender bridge, right?

For what it's worth.. my meager experience with this would hunch me to believe starting with the pickups would get you closer.

Take it or leave it -- not a banter point.

Still unsure what you're trying to get it to sound like... or what's wrong with it.

I've yet to have a unity that I couldn't dial in with a pro rig or pro di.

90s Clover Leaf Tuners - BLACK - Wanted (Allparts?)

I'm looking for 90s era black clover leaf tuners... really don't want to dork with the base late holes (want to use the same ones)

Does anyone have some for sale/trade (I have fantastic condition chrome w/bridge) or know if Allparts etc has a direct replacement?

I'm usually not one to post a NBD thread, but I felt this one is SPECIAL and DIFFERENT.
It's a bit of a long story, sorry! :rollno:

Almost two years ago, I saw a KILLER Peavey Dyna Unity on CL. It was a beautiful BURST and I immediately fell for it.

The seller was asking $299.00 for the bass with a case. I immediately contacted him and asked if he would ship. He stated that if he was going to ship, he'd rather post it on Ebay and I could buy it as a BUY IT NOW from him that way. I asked him to PLEASE make it a PRIVATE AUCTION and explained the process and my reasoning. He agreed.

Every day for almost TEN DAYS, the guy would contact me and say "I'll be posting it tonight, keep an eye out for it". Dealing with this fellow was IMPOSSIBLE to say the least. I'd ask for SOME kind of idea as to time he'd list it, and he'd say "I get home from work about 11pm, right around midnight I should have it listed". I'd then wait up until every night waiting for the listing to appear. One excuse after another would follow the next day. Yet each and every night, night after night, I would stay up WAITING for the listing..some nights until 2am. Never a listing.

Then (I remember it like it was yesterday) Thursday rolls around and I get my morning email saying he would be posting it "tonight". I asked him to "PLEASE NOT POST IT TONIGHT", I had a gig and wouldn't be home until very late, and I didn't want to miss it.
SO, what does he do? He lists it THURSDAY NIGHT, about 9pm and with a Buy It Now....but NOT AS A PRIVATE LISTING! I came home late and thought I'd look just in case! SURE ENOUGH, I have an APOLOGY email from the guy...he "thought" if he listed it for an extra $100.00, that it wouldn't sell....WRONG. I went nutty!

I offered this guy extra money to ship it to me in the first place, I explained he would save some coin not having to pay Ebay....yadda..yadda...

Fast forward about 6 months, and a fellow TBer puts that VERY SAME BASS up for sale here in the Classified section. He was looking for cash/trades....at the time, I was totally tapped out and we couldn't work out a trade deal. He also wanted (I FORGET NOW) I THINK $400.00, still a very fair price for this beauty.

So, I lost it a second time. Now, here is where I lost track of it. I THINK there was another buyer...more time passed, and AGAIN it was on the Classified. $500.00 if I'm not mistaken...again, this is the period I just lost track, gave up and said it's fate that I don't get this bass....timing again, I just didn't have the coin.

Fast forward a few more months...and enter MNAirhead...I've purchased a few basses from Tim and I was looking at a TL-5 he had. He knows what I like, and he sets them up PERFECTLY for me. He happens to mention he as a Dyna Unity I might be interested in. I asked him to send me a few pictures of both basses. I doubted I could swing both. Low & behold......THERE WAS THAT DYNA AGAIN! I was positive....I kept the original shots that the CL seller sent me! I compared them, and SURE ENOUGH! Tim had purchased it from somewhere, I can't remember. I wasn't letting it get away again. I paid for the TL-5 and Tim waited for me to sell some stuff and get the Unity.

Well, she arrived TODAY!:hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper:
It is in MINT condition. I was afraid after changing hands so often, it would pick up a few bangs and bumps. NOPE...it is still a killer minty fresh bass!

Enough of my gabbin, here are a few pics Tim sent me. My camera stinks so I'm using his pictures. Words can't describe the feeling..the last few days watching it travel across country via FEDEX was like torture!

SPECIAL thanks to Tim aka MNAirhead for being patient waiting for me to get the coin, making special shipping arrangements, attaining a case it lost along the way, setting it up with new strings, giving it a killer setup and getting her safely to me. This may be the one bass I actually name!:hiding:

Bridge = Shaller Roller
Preamp = Peavey Dyna

(they used them on early Ferrite TLs, Dynas, Foundation Active etc)

If you're asking for your RJ, you won't like it.. it's very close to the RJ.. only major difference is the controls are not by dipswitches.

The TL was a very late TL.. some of the parts on it are rare... not modified.. bridge = ABM"ish"

I believe the preamps are the same except for the concentric tone controls on the VFL models.

I have TL-5s with SF and VFL. To me the SF are tighter and have less of a pronounced mid-range. The VFL have more of a growlish sound and more pronounced mids as would be expected from a humbucker. How the EQ is set makes a large difference with both but I haven't been able to make either really sound like the other.

That being said, I really like both and they fit well with the Rock and Blues I play. If I had to make a choice the body color and condition would probably be the deciding factors.
