Ok, sometimes I question my own intelligence. In the past couple of months I have purchased an 80's fury, a set of early 80's Foundation tuners, and just recently a set of Lightening P knobs from an early 80's Foundation. All good prices and good things to have, except I truly prefer 90's Peaveys. I've never really had an addictive personality, but something is wrong with me and Peavey.

I guess I am becoming a wimp, but I really like the smaller bodies and lighter weight in general.

In terms of Foundations specifically, the upper horn on the eighties Foundations only extend to the 14th fret as apposed to the 12th like the '90's bodies. I also prefer the VFL style pickups on late 90's Foundations to the Superferrites on the 80's models. I would also disagree that the tuners are lower quality. I believe Peavey went to the press in ferrules and screw in tuners to save weight over the bolt down ferrules of early version Foundations. Considering how much lighter the 90's models are if they had left the older style on the neckdive would have been unbearable.

Don't get me wrong, I still have 3 eighties model Peaveys, and I would take them over most similar era Fenders, But for me the 90's models just fit better.

What models are you speaking speifically discussing - just want to ensure we don't have a lurker expecting a TL6 to be lightweight etc..

The 90s kind of were the "explosion" of a ton of high quality, mismarketed mid to upper level basses - they did change (some would say lower) the hardware quality and ditch some of the handcrafted vintage vibe.. Premium hardware was reserved for the expensive basses - like the sarzo above (2 tek, Wilkinson, Schaller).. the "gig" quality was "gigafied"

You are right there was a large variation of models(and changes within model lines) in the nineties. I am a passive player at heart, so my post was primariliy referring to Foundations and Furies. I have a single humbucker '94 Forum and I would agree it is not exactly light. It's not T-40, or '76 Jazz heavy, but it is a bit of a load. But in general, the ninties versions of the Foundation and Fury were significantly lighter than their predecessors.

Plays well. I think it sounds fine as it is. Very fine. Much like I remember my 2 band pre amp Stingray (on the bridge p/u alone). IIRC, at least as heavy as my Stingray. Bit heavier than my SUB. Think T40 heavy.
The sound is worth the trouble of dealing with it.
Not a bass for the faint-hearted.

You might get the bass set up and give it lots of playing time before replacing the neck.

Like all graphite it comes down to a combination of electronics, strings, touch and setup.

For your specific instance, we may need to do it via PM as chance are some of your solutions may vary from Peavey land.

I do have a resource that I can call upon to help refine our setup - he greatly helped dial in my Schack issues.

I'm eager to learn how your bass turns out.

The original neck on the Forum 5 has a great feel. You should try it out. The neck pocket is a Peavey original so you will likely need to do some routing to make a graphite replacement neck fit. Could be a great combination - like a Tim the Toolman version of the GV.

The stock VHL pickups are very good. They are similar to pickups on Cirri, but are wider and pickup from more of the strings. The pickup are also truely huge. They are not only very wide, but also very deep. If Fred ever makes the 5 string Dark Star pickups this is probably the only bass where they will be a drop in fit with no routing needed. The stock 2 band preamp is also good.

If your Forum 5 only weighs 10 pounds then you have a rare light one. The four that I have all weigh in at 11 pounds. All the metal (bridge, tuners, THICK control plate, knobs, etc) and the huge pickups contributes to the weight.

I wasn't quite clear. There may be an intermittent connection on a cable inside the amp, not the one from your bass to the amp. They do have to put up with a lot of vibration.

Ya, gonna have to open it up. As for vibration - sure does, outside of being moved it is sitting on an 810 and a 15. I have been able to expand a few bar walls with it :)
