Dyna Evolution

There were four basic core generations

1-super ferrite with switchable preamp
2-bolt on neck "vfl-ish" (soap bar + optional) pickups
3-neck through "unity" (varied pickups)
4-signature variants (different names - varied pickups)

Overall they all had hardware that was a bit nicer.

Sounds and varied a bit.

Finishes seemed to have prettier options as they morphed.

Pictures, please? I bought my second '95 Fury a little while back. Took quite a while to get the plastic off the pickguard!

Plastic didn't peel so nicely. Pups were just replaced which I assume was due to brittle wiring- had the same issue in my 1987 from what seemed to be non use. They're the crappy gotoh p pups with the loose plastic covers and the booster magnet on the bottom. They'll do for now. Will need to shield the cavity- as with my other furys.

I see zero signs of wear on this (smudges, finger prints, etc.). Came from a fellow firefighter who got it from church. I believe they purchased it new. HSC, book, tags, and all tools included. Wish it had an original sales slip.

Coolio! I've not been particularly impressed with the mid-90's p-style pickups in the Furys. I put a Geezer Butler EMG in my first Fury (black), along with an old Raven Labs PBR-1 preamp I had lying around and a new pickguard. Sounds just terrific with GHS Precision Flats. I just received the new Lindy Fralin pickup which is going in the new one (white) along with a Stellartone Tone Styler which I also happen to have lying around the shop. A fancier pickguard will eventually happen and one's going to get rounds of some sort. I find the Furys light and incredibly comfortable to play. The end results are great value for money. Now, a red one...

On a related note, a good buddy of mine who I played with for years, is a retired captain from the Toronto Fire Services. He and his firefighter colleagues have a very credible band called [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] which plays events around the city. He's the drummer. I've played in another band with a firefighter trombonist. You guys seem to have a musical streak!

Could it be that whole single pickup theory? That only having one pickup in the circuit is superior to having 2 and just turning one down.

Or could it just be the mojo from the older patriot being from the 80s vs 90? Could also just be a better piece of wood, or a better day in the pickup winding division?

The world may never know.

Was there a good deal of similarity between the foundation with just the neck on vs the patriot?

There's a lot of similarity - you can definitely tell they're from the same family, and the Super Ferrites just sound awesome on both - honestly, I'd be happy with either.

Part of my preference is weight - the Patriot is noticeably lighter, and my shoulder enjoys that greatly. However, the Patriot also seems to sit in the mix just a bit better, once I've turned the bass on my amp up by a small amount. The difference is small, but noticeable. Both of them play incredibly well and have about the same neck, so it's all down to tone and weight. I'll be playing them both at practice for the foreseeable future to see where I finally land on a favorite, or if I just bounce back and forth....

Well I just saved some money. Craigslist ad had a Dyna 5 fretless posted.

Had never seen a Dyna fretless before, yet alone a 5 string.

Seller said sold a while ago and forgot to take the ad down. Also thought was priced too low.

Not surprised it was sold.
