U.S. Peavey Club

Ok - I hope I'm not at the beginning of a problem here. Hoping someone can give me some guidance.

2001 Cirrus 5. Two gigs ago, I had a pretty good hum coming through the amp. I trouble shot it to the point I figured out it is the bridge pup - nothing in the signal chain, and nothing from the neck pup.

I changed the batteries (18v) and played a gig over the weekend - didn't notice any noise... ok - must have been the batteries, or dirty power, or lighting, etc. at the first gig.

Last night, I'm practicing through headphones and the hum is back - definitely only coming from the bridge pup.

Thoughts - is my Preamp going bad, or the pickup going microphonic?

If it's the Pre- ok I'll probably buy the EMG BQS system and install it (never done that before....)
If it's the pup - now what do I do?? The VFLs are a non-standard size, correct?

How do I tell which one is giving me the issue?
 
@richntiff ......any preamp noise will be on both pickups. I'm pretty sure Peavey has replacement pickups but first check the solder joints where the PU wires are attached to the PCB. Might be a bad connection. FWIW...VFLs are potted in epoxy. Never heard of one that was potted successfully being taken apart.

I'm sure all the VFLs are the same size (for however many strings) and run on 18VDC. They have probably changed vendors since 2001 but doubt you'll hear a difference.

How do the passive VFLs as on my late 90's USA Foundation 5er, compare to any preamp versions?

IMO, different. Can't say the difference is good or bad. I like both. I have passives in the koa TL-5 with the 5 knob Dyna Bass pre and it's awesome. I have mid 90s actives in the "Sarzo" TL-5 and later ones in the 4 string Cirrus and they are awesome, too. What can I say

I realize I stated this earlier in this thread, but I cannot say enough about the Axcelerator 2-T I picked up last week.
I found myself waking up at 3AM to go and play a while - I just can't get over how great it is.
I have an Axcelerator-5 and previously owned a gorgeous Axcelerator 4-Plus, so I'm fairly familiar with how great these basses are to play.
My Sarzo, which was my absolute favorite, is in time-out in its wall hanger.

I only own 11 basses: 2 G&L's and 9 US Peaveys, and this 2T is the best of the bunch...it's simply the best bass I've ever picked up to play.
I'm not even that big of an active guy (I'm in passive mode on the L2k & Sarzo), or a big fan of red, but it's both and I really dig it.
 
I shielded the control cavity in my Foundation Fretless yesterday. The control cavity had some spray on shield but it was not evenly applied and not tied to ground. The cover had no shielding of any kind. Took about an hour to do the control cavity and cover with 3M copper tape. It is quieter than before the shielding job but not as quiet as I had hoped. I think I may shield the bottom of the pick up cavities and tie them to ground and see if that helps.

Anyone have experience with this?

Not sure if you are asking for results or thoughts on doing it. I have done it before, but it was while doing pickup swap so I cannot comment on effectiveness (though it shouldn't hurt). To do it, I just lined the pickup routes with foil tape. Then I ran a wire from the pickup compartment to the control cavity. I stripped the ends of the wire, spread the individual strands of wire, and taped them down with copper tape (completing the circuit). I have seen people solder the ground to the copper, but this looks terrible. Taped down wire ends work and look better. You can see what I am talking about in the bottom right corner of the J pickup route of this picture.

I've never thought of doing that, but it seems like a great idea - anything beats my soldering.
I have a couple of basses waiting for shielding, so I will give this a go. Thanks for sharing.
 
I was previously in the electronics industry so soldering is second nature to me. I prefer to solder those connections because friction joints can corrode and the connection can become a problem. Evidently most of the better instrument builders also prefer soldered connections because that is what I have seen in expensive basses.

That said, I do understand that some do not have soldering skills and the taped joint sounds like a viable alternative and may actually work just fine for a long time.
