I'd prefer it not to have that feature, just because of the added cost. I have my current turntable correctly hooked to my PC sound card (no USB). Not too much into transferring LPs to digital audio, but I can do it whenever I want with no problems.

Agreed. The built in RIAA pre-amp might be helpful, for some folks. Though, not me; I have RIAA pre-amps.

...and ordered my new turntable! But since I couldn't find someone who could ship the Audio-Technica AT-LP1240-USB to my country, this is what I will receive approximately in a week:

With even better specs than the AT for the same price ($385). Regarding the cartridge, I was thinking of the Ortofon 2M Red and later the rave reviews that the Denon DL-110 has gotten made me think seriously about it. But after letting know my thoughts to a sales representative at Needle Doctor, this is what he said:

The DL-110 is great, but I don't think it's the safest to use on the TTXUSB. That turntable uses a metallic platter, which will be problematic for the Denon. Instead, I'd use this cartridge:

It's great, and will work well on that turntable. Thoughts?

Brian

And as I told him: If it's great for an expert like you, it's great for an amateur like me! So I also ordered the Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge.

For comparison purposes, I recorded a video of my current turntable in action. I'll record another one with my new Numark playing the same LP/song as soon as I put it to work. Unfortunately, close-ups aren't well focused by my camera, but hopefully and luckily you will be able to see the wrong tonearm azimuth and the angle I had to put on the cartridge related to the headshell to compensate. Notice that the video hosting site lowered the audio quality to some extent. The video file in my hard disk has a slightly crisper top end.

Can't wait! :hyper:

And here it is. My new Numark TTXUSB has just arrived! What a great machine. Of course, the cartridge (Nagaoka MP-110) still needs some break-in time, but anyway you can hear its brand-new sound:

Again, it's a direct-to-pc recording with absolutely no modifications. But in this case, what you hear is the turntable's built-in preamp (line/phono switch set to "line"). No external phono preamp involved.

My roommate will be moving in May so I need to get myself a turntable. I'd like to buy new as I know next to nothing about turntables, what to look for, brands and whatnot.

The thing is I don't have much of a budget, I'm thinking 200, maybe 250 if it makes a big difference, but I'd like to stay around 200 and under.

The amplifier and speakers are mine so I only have the table to worry about, any suggestions?

Within your budget, undoubtedly this one:

Hmm... the only cheaper TT I'd dare to recommend is Invalid Link Removed, but it's still in development stage. Not the type of turntable I like but aside from it, I don't think you'll find something decent (brand new) within your total budget. This one seems to be a serious option for the "budget audiophile" (if such specimen exists).

This one could actually work as their estimated delivery date is in may. I'll look into it.

I'm open to other suggestions :D

edit:
I just scanned the local craiglist equivalent and even with my limited knowledge I'm pretty sure nothing on there is good.
Also, I'm currently using a cheap sony. So anything better while not "hi-fi" will do.

FYI, for those of us fans of the Technics SL-1200 who didn't buy it when it still was in production (and don't want to buy used because of the inherent risks), the best option is any of the so-called "Super-OEM turntables", which are basically top-spec DJ style turntables manufactured by [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] and rebranded under different names with different small distinctive touches for each brand. The best known brands currently selling Super-OEM turntables are Audio-Technica, Numark and Stanton. These are their Super-OEM models:

Numark TTXUSB (the one I own :hyper: :bassist:)
[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (straight tonearm version of the ST.150. Great for scratching, but not recommended if you care for your records)

And these are other not so well known ones (as far as I know):

Reloop RP-6000 MK6 B

There's also the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], which is another fine TT made in Japan, but it also has a straight tonearm, which is the feature that Vestax takes pride of. Skip-proof, but not easy on the records. The [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] is the S-shaped tonearm version.

Question for you guys regarding turntables, there's two turntable I could get used and I'd like your thoughts: Dual CS 450 and Yamaha YP66 (Canadian version of the Yamaha 211, difference being it has a rosewood board)
