According to reviews, it seems to be the best alternative to the (now defunct) Technics SL-1200. At $385 and since buying used is a risk I'm not willing to take, this is a strong candidate for my next Christmas gift. :hyper:

That looks awesome!! My turntable is the audio-technica ap-120,which I love. This thing looks really nice though.
I have the downward spiral on vinyl, it sounds amazing.

Agreed! Downward spiral does sound sweet on vinyl! So does the newer Pretty Hate Machine. If you don`t have that already, you should snag a copy!

My setup is pretty crappy but it's very enjoyable anyways.

Sony PS-LX300USB (belongs to my roommate)
Pioneer VSX-D498 receiver
Pioneer HTP205/305 speakers x2

And I only have like 20 vinyls, I'm fairly new to this.

If it sounds good to you, it's good.

Spread the word among your friends that you're into vinyl. I've had a coupld of friends give me their old record collections because they don't have a turntable and have no interest in getting back into it.

The table is really not that good, I'll buy a better one someday. The receiver and speakers are fine by me, I don't see the need to change them.

My friends are much younger then yours I think ;) I'm 20, so those who have vinyls are the ones into it.

Just to keep the ball rolling, a question for the experts: Do you think the Invalid Link Removed is the best affordable ($90-100) cartridge? (That's what I'm planning to buy when I get my turntable, since it comes without a cartridge)

I haven't had personal experience with the Ortofan, but here's what I know from my own experiences...

Your cartridge's performance is somewhat dependent on the turntable. One cartridge might be great with one and not so great with another. On my previous Technics table, I was using an Audio-Technica cartridge ($100-ish, can't remember the model) that sounded really nice. On my current Harman-Kardon table, the same AT cartridge sounds harsh. I'm currently running a Grado Black body with an 8mz stylus (essentially a Grado Gold for a little less money) and it sounds marvelous. The slightly more mellow top end of the Grado is a great match for my TT.

The best advice I can offer is to do a Google search for discussion topics on the Ortofan and see what people are saying about it. The turntable forms at www.audiokarma.org have been a great source of good info for me.

Not much more money than a 1200 in good nick. Though the 1200 will not depreciate in value.

Still a tempting choice. I love my Audio Technica headphones; perhaps I'd like the turntable as well. For DJing I prefer Sony 7506 'phone's exaggerated top end to AT's accurate response.

USB eh? I wonder how the DAC is. Better than a decent soundcard? Better than on board sound? Possibly nice for ripping, useless with my Serato box.

Someone else mentioned Ortofan. I've never liked them. Bad experience with dropped channels. I have Shure M44G carts on my SL1200s. Love them. Best skip resistance evar.

I'd prefer it not to have that feature, just because of the added cost. I have my current turntable correctly hooked to my PC sound card (no USB). Not too much into transferring LPs to digital audio, but I can do it whenever I want with no problems.
