The really old ones seem to (90's and older).
I've had a couple of 2000's colored finish ones that weren't as thick and same with my new ones, probably because the quality and durability of poly being better.

I'd say the poly is pretty thick. I haven't measured exactly but here's my 1990 black Geddy that had some nasty scars when I got it. Purely cosmetic but they are there none the less so you can get an idea of the thickness. Two pics showing the pain, one showing the beauty.

I imagine it's a Jan/Feb 2000? I used to own it's close siblings, Mk1 #W4034 which was Feb, and now own Mk2 #W4035.

Correct. At the time Pete said it was the "first Wal of the millennium" - it was ordered around Sept 1999 and received in Jan 2000 (the good ol days).

I believe just the triangular headstock, but Caca and Kulit I'm sure can confirm this.

I'm in the market for a Wal based on what I hear on Tool albums and RCHP Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I want to get a mk1. Not having any luck finding a used one (PM me if you have any leads!). What is the general consensus on new Wals? Are they as good as the old ones? They are very expensive
