The PU's seem to be at a different location on the 5 string vs. the 4 string MkII. Is that true or does it just look that way because of the differently shaped housing?

I think it's mostly because the 5-string pickups look narrower, since they don't have a pickup mounting ring like the 4s.
Which would explain why I've yet to see one with spacing > than 17.5. Hmm..... Mohammad or the mountain?
All four of my Wal 5's have 16.5mm spacing.
I had seen a Wal Mark III 5-string fretted on Basschat just a few days ago. It is a bit older post, but looked like it didn't sell as yet. Shedua facings...looks like great condition. Just $3900 or so! Of course there would be shipping and duties to the states.
There is also a Mark III 5-string here on TB....

No fretless 5's right now that I know of either. But the one on basschat does have a headstock crack repair.
Hello all, long time looker, first time poster. I've got a pair of Wals ('00 black poly MKI four string and '00 walnut MKII four string fretless) that I'll post pics of soon. In the meantime, here's a question for you Wal experts:
The nut on my MKII is damaged: the little piece between the G string and the lateral edge of the neck has chipped off. Looks like I'll need to replace the nut. I'd like a brass one, preferably. At any rate, does anyone know of a way to obtain a Wal nut? Or at least a brand that has the same dimensions?

Well, just like any other bass, if you want brass it will have to be cut and shaped by hand.
If you want a factory black one, you can contact Paul Herman through Wal's website. I've ordred spare pieces a few times now....

Well then, how badly would I diminish the value of a fretted 5 by defretting it - professionally.
If you spend some time over at basschat, you'll see those folks over there do conversions and refins all the time...especially if you read the registry, and still get full pop.
I just came across this Wal brochure but it seems to contridict earlier discussion....

I'm pretty sure the bridge space specs in that brochure are incorrect. How about measuring the spacing on yours?

Ya some people seem to think Wals fall under the same genre as Fenders and Rics with Refins and devaluing. I had been told by a fellow TBer recently that my Pro IIe has been devalued since its a refin.... I suppose it's a matter of opinion and the market but I'm under the same impression as mike and the folks at basschat.

Walk up and down the street with your lawn mower and cut grass until you dont have to sell it.
