@djaxup if you plan on replacing itself or having a tech do it, you'll need to find 4.7 microfarad radial capacitors. Wal has used 25v,35v, 45v, and 50v - any of those will work all the same. 35v is what Wal currently uses.
Yup, simply put, you waited too long. But I would suggest taking the boards out and sending them to Paul for refurbishing. Your particular boards will also have the five tiny gray/orange-tip resistors that will also need changing. They're very tightly positioned to work with, and "okay" solder skills is making me think twice about a DIY recommendation.
The end of last year I took my 5 string fretless to Paul for a very long awaited 22 year full service. I was shoving card behind the knobs just to able to use it. He repaired everything including them capacitors. He even re flattened the fret board for me. He basically transformed a well used & very tired bass into something I've never experienced. It hardly goes out of tune anymore either & the precisioness of the set up if off the charts. Send your bass to him for a service you won't regret it. I'm definitely taking my other 2 this year's to him. If I can find time when I'm not using them. You don't realise how important you should get your basses serviced regularly.
Yup, no upgrade or mod transforms a bass as much as a really good set up... and for much less than the price of new pickups or hardware. Always amazed how few people get that!
Actually one of the coils had gone open circuit on the neck pickup too so that was also painstakingly repaired. Poor thing it was so ready for its service.
I totally agree about setups now. There's definitely a change in levels of precisioness now concerning set ups in the modern world so to speak. Not like in the 80's say.
But omg what a bass it is now. It's utterly amazing to play.

Paul serviced and refurbished my thirty year old Wal Mrk 2 last year. It is the best bass I own surpassing my Alembic Series 2 by a tiny margin IMHO. When the bass arrived back to me I thought I received a Bugatti not a bass guitar. Paul’s craftsmanship is second to non.

Refret and fingerboard dressing, electronics service, refinish in gloss lacquer, changed all the screws.

Fret-board levelled as id managed to gouge 5 small valleys into it, neck re-angled, brass nut lowered to the correct height, faulty neck pick-up repaired, complete electronics serviced & repaired & all the hardware serviced and the most accurate set up ive ever had on a bass. Im guessing he completely strips the bass back to nothing it was like a new, couldn't believe it tbh. Actually it looks like the neck pick up cover has been changed too? Ive literally just noticed its different to the bridge pickup cover & looks new?
Neck re-angled, not sure I understand, can you tell me more about that please?
