Yeah,,the ''Pickguard Wall'' is still on Ebay , now along with a 5'er MK.2..

Not to mention the 2 or so that are here on TB,,,

A good position to be in for someone like me looking to purchase a Wal,,

Maybe the ecconomy again but man,,there are so many of my favorite basses available out there right now,,,

And this is a good time (again) to ask for your setups... especially with pole piece height.
A pic would be nice. In my case the E String pieces are screwed a bit into the pu while the two high strings have a bit screwed out pole pieces.

Its all personal preference about set-ups. See which one works best for you and the particular Wal that you have.

As stated before....to get the same sound/tone out of one Wal compared to the other, may require a different set-up.

No, there's no reason to think the pickguard is original. Some early owner installed it, and it's been up for sale with the pickguard at least a couple of times.

A member of a local dutch bass forum contacted the store, who told him that it is still there, on hold for someone from Finland.

I honestly don't know what is going on, but it seems one of the two sellers involved is at least mistaken, since we're talking about the same serial number. Again, I'm not accusing anyone, I just think some clarification would be nice.

That's because while Paul McCartney does own a Wal 5 and has used it on a couple of things that required a lower range, the Wal really is not at all what's associated with the "Sir Paul sound"--that would be the Hofner Beatle bass.

And, I personally dont find the tone JC gets with Tool all that impressive...its good and Im a big Tool fan...but it doesnt make me want to buy a Wal. Of course thats my opinion. Geddy's Wal tone(s)...THAT makes me save my pennies!

Im pretty sure i have seen ursusaltered's pics on his white fuzzy carpet, and the same blue carpet/towel from the stores pics.

Dude...as not to scare potential buyers away from your evilBay ad. I would upload a batch of new pics to that ad.

Not sure if you took the "blue towel" pics, but if you didnt, its a red flag in the evilBay world when 2 or more poeple are advertising using the same pictures.

Personally i think its even lazy in TB world here when someone decides that a purchase "wasnt for them" and then decides to use the previous for sale thread.

Wals built before Ian Waller died in 1988 are sometimes considered to be slightly more collectable, but sound-wise there's really no difference between the Wal Customs from different eras. In the early days Wal also made a Pro model that had a different preamp, a pickguard, and simpler woods, and those do sound a bit different (according to folks who've owned them, which I haven't).

I was curious about exploring this, and recently put a set of DR Flats on my 81' Wal 'Custom Bass', and have been getting some pretty 'Gov'neresque' tones out of her rather than the more aggressive sounds I get w/ rounds. Especially favoring the neck pup with most of the treble rolled off and played w/ a pick.

Really cool to try if anyone else is curious as well!
