Wal Bass Club.

I had a dream last night that my mom (who I've not been as close to in recent years) told me that she found a Wal bass at the library book sale and bought if for $1000. (There's no reason she would ever buy a bass at all but anyway...) I grilled her about how it couldn't possibly be a Wal and she said "Yes it has a case and everything". I ran over to her place, hoping she would lend it to me for a gig or something and well... it turned out that she had not bought a Wal. She bought a weird Japanese bass from the 80s with a name that started with a W and also some weird Mandolin-like thing.
Screwed over by a dream yet again. Back to the drawing board!

Just got my first Wal

As I approached (and very recently passed) my 12-month anniversary of wiring my initial deposit to Paul for my first ever Wal, I took the plunge on reading this entire thread from the start. That was a great trip, and was a lot of valuable work. I learned a lot, and although I have posted in this thread only two or three times, I now nearly feel acquainted with many of the great folks here in this thread, having journeyed quickly through your own stories and adventures. I am very grateful that such a collective exists.

(Queue Borat: “I likey you peoples – a’teach me how to be like you?”)

When I wired my deposit, Paul had communicated over three years from deposit to completion, with second deposit and final specs due upon two years out from estimated completion. Under the timeline communicated at time of my deposit, I figured around one-year from my deposit (i.e., now-ish), I’d be called upon for a second wire and hard decisions on my specs. Curious if the new timeline has changed that estimate (and I figure it has.)

I haven’t written to Paul in a year now, and thought about checking in with him next month; but I know some of you good folks got deposits in for new builds in the few months around the time I jumped in, so I am curious if any of you are aware of what sort of adjusted timeline I should be expecting?

(I thought I was solid on my specs a year ago, but a lot happens in a year – I now have many new soul-searching spec questions to sort out...!)

I think the only real decison you need to have right now is if you're ordering a 4, 5 or 6 string, and what fingerboard.
You don't need to have hardware choice or body facing choice anywhere near in yet.
Got it - that definitely helps to disaggregate the spec decisions into phases like that.

From reading through this thread, am I making the right assumption that, for 4-stringers, the Mk1 is more comfortable than the Mk2 in seated position; but the Mk2 is better balanced in standing position? Or are the standing position balances of the Mk1 and Mk2 (4-stringers) fairly comparable to each other?

Six or seven years ago, when ordering a Wal was a mere dream of mine, I built my only fretless bass from Warmoth parts using a mahogany core and walnut top. It was my Wal-inspired build, which I dreamed to replace with a real, live Wal of similar specs someday. Over the years I fell out of fretless playing, and thus I initially spec’d for a fretted when I did find myself finally ordering a Wal. But recently my walnut fretless has found itself back in my hands and I am enjoying it more than ever. My bandmates have responded really well to my sound with it, too. All this to say…my mind is now back to spinning ‘round the planet of fretless Wal.

I know some fans don’t particular care for HYF, but there are a lot of songs and lyrics that I really appreciate from that album, and this is one of them. Thanks for sharing!

Suddenly you were gone, from all the lives you left your mark upon.

Neil wrote that on afterimage and they used it in his obituary. It's from grace under pressure but still 80s and lyrics of real depth

I really like Hold Your Fire. I think it is their last truly great album. Roll the Bones also has some nice songs but most albums after didn’t do it for me anymore. With some songs as an exception. But not the albums as a whole. They kind of started repeating themselves from there on.
